NEWS VIDEO HUNGARY RAPSODY N°2
on: July 12, 2005, 01:37:20 PM

"Melkion is the guard of one of the crowned Phoenixes of Akkylanie. These birds, extremely rare, are divine creatures for Griffons, because their body is only flames."

I have the honor to announce to you the nearest exit of "Melkion" my first Cd of pure improvisation, taking again the matter and concept launched formerly a few years ago by Keith Jarrett who is to sit down in front of his piano without any idea or melody, rhythm or harmony structure preestablished, letting thus simply the intimacy of its heart sing and its personality to be expressed in total freedom.

Of course my goal was not to seek has to imitate K.Jarrett owing to the fact that I would be in any event unable and so sometimes an influence can feel that was not wanted, however I took a particular care has to make the matter of the pure improvisation without never breaking it,or cut it in other words has to close the eyes, to pose the hands on the keyboard and to start has to create instantaneously without knowing how been unrolled the music, I insist of course the fact that no preparation of some kind was made before the recording as of the these 6 parts, the recording did not undergo any assembly of some kind that it is, it remained has the rough state.

The ultimate goal of this kind of experiment is not any more to listen to the work of a musician but rather a musician has work in an experiment whose same do not know unfolding to him and who thus has something of completely single as much for the pianist that the listener.

Record in two meetings it represents part of the history of my musical life or Miss the secret imagination of an intimate feeling to the transitory dream of a total freedom. 6 Parts containing ready one hour of music completely to improvise.
Recorded on Imperial Bosendorfer.

1.Part I,  10"30    ------ Extrait
2.Part II,  7"56    ------ Extrait
3.Part III,  10"41 ------ Extrait

5.Part V,  11"11   ------ Extrait

Hi Jemboy, why don't you post some of your mp3 samples in the Audition room? I can't listen to your stuff right now but I will when I get home. Nice to see yet another fellow Jarrett fan/spontaneous improviser!

Hey Jemboy, not bad! I like your music! Sort of a "heavier" New Age with more passion in it. And a lot more key changes, chromaticisms to spice things up. I like it! I guess thats sort of how I play too though I try to imitate older music more often...at least for now. I hear a lot of Jarrett influence in your playing. Good work.

Allow me to supply you with a quote from Keith Jarrett: "Jazz has built up this need to be unique. That's egotistical. As far as I'm concerned, the last thing you should try to be is original. If you sound like 80,000 others, as long as you don't imitate, it's still music."

So I would say since Jarrett has inspired you, then when his influence comes out in your music, it IS your heart and your personal voice you are speaking with! It isn't EXACTLY like Jarrett, thats what Jarrett meant by "don't imitate."  Imitation is where you play long passages more or less exactly the same. You do not do this. :)

I would even go so far as to say that if a bit of new music has NOTHING familiar in it (i.e. a pleasing scale, chord, melodic fragment) then it's not really worth listening to. I find that all music I enjoy has some sort of familiar sound to it.

Some modern composers insist that they have nothing familiar in their music, but that sort of music is becoming even more common nowadays, and even that overly dissonant sound is familiar.

Very enjoyable, Alexandre. I liked the one with the trills best because it least reminded me of Jarrett, not that being able to emulate Jarrett is anything to worry about. For some reason I was also reminded of David Olen Baird's "Garden Suite", a work I have a very high opinion of. I think anyone with more than a little technique (and from your Mazeppa video you have plenty of technique to spare) will soon want to use it to advantage in improvisation. Your playing here also seems to embody much jazz influence. Do you play much jazz yourself, like Jarrett, or are you simply influenced by his sounds ?
