Impressionism
on: July 14, 2005, 06:32:28 AM
Does anyone know of pieces that sound similar to the following:

Por Les Arpeges Composes (Debussy)
Jeux D'eau (Ravel)
Une Barque Sur L'Ocean (Ravel)
Prelude in G op.32 no. 5 (Rachmaninoff)
Reverie (Debussy)
Gymnopedie No. 1 (Satie)

These pieces always seem to trigger a uniquely pleasant feeling, quite different from whatever is felt when one hears, for example,  "Liebestraume", or Schubert's
A flat Impromptu, which both have more of a romantic beauty to them.

Hmmm.. well try any of the following, which are similar in some ways to the pieces you listed.

Albeniz - Parts of "Iberia"
Ravel - "Ondine" from "Gaspard de la nuit"
Ravel - "Introduction and Allegro"
Ravel -  "La vallee des cloches" from Miroirs
Ravel - "Noctuelles" from Miroirs (super-impressionism!)
Debussy - "Images" books I and II
Debussy - "L'isle Joyeuse"
Debussy - "From a Sketchbook" (don't remember French title)
Debussy - Many of his piano preludes, especially "Ondine"
Debussy - Many of the other piano etudes
Debussy - Sonata for flute, viola, and harp
Debussy - Nocturnes for Orchestra
Debussy - La Mer
Rachmaninoff - Prelude in g# minor (op.32 no.12)
Rachmaninoff - Prelude in b minor (op.32 no.10)
Rachmaninoff - a few variations from "Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini" (some are more "impressionistic" than others)
Stravinksy - "The Firebird" ballet (don't get the "ballet suite"!! Get the full ballet!)
Tchaikovsky- "Dance of the Sugarplum fairies" from the Nutcracker (I always thought this was a little impressionistic)
Liszt - Many of the late piano pieces, like "Mephisto Polka" and "Nuages Gris"
Liszt - Les jeux d'eau à la Villa d'Este

Try Frederick Delius "3 preludes for piano" (no. 2 is my favourite).

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Debussy - Etudes #2, 3, 7, Etude Retrouvee
de Falla - Nights in the Gardens of Spain
Griffes - The Fountain of Acqua Paola
Godowsky - Java Suite
Scriabin - Sonata #4, 5, 10

I love this style of music too  :)
