How to use a metronome with 1/16-notes ?
on: July 14, 2005, 11:46:54 AM
I am practicing the no1 Bach Invention in C major. This is my very first piece (just one own composition before). I could not resist trying it .:-*
(I bought my digital Yamaha p90 for my kids). I play (now) at 55 bpm.

How to use a metronome (Boss DB90)?

1.) Put the metronome at 220 (=4x55) bpm and no accent
(beat on each 1/16-note).

2.) Put the metronome at 220 bpm with accent every fourth beat
(accent on each 1/4-note and beat on each 1/16-note).

3.) Just put the metronome at 55 bpm.

I Guess that 3.) is right :-\

I manage 2.)   :)
But not 3.) so good.

Shall I practice 3.)  ::)

55 would be ideal but if you're having problems keeping it steady practice at 220, then move to 110 and then to 55.  You could also try just clapping four beats to the 55 until you feel completely comfortable with it.  It's harder to play steadily when you have to think about pitch and finger movement as well as keeping time.

Thank You for answering ! :)

I have been occupied (still am and will be for a while)
trying to change from mordents to trills.

So I have not practiced so much at just 55 bpm yet but I sure will.
I think I mange it quite good already.

And putting the metronome to just 55 bpm nearly makes the metronome silent
at least compared to 220 bpm + accent. Quite a relief!

My advice----
DO NOT worry about the trills and mordents until you can easily play it with the metronome while omitting the trills and mordents.  I feel that it is imperative(sp?) to have it "in your fingers" before attempting the ornamentation.  Yes, be able to do it with the metronome at a slow speed, and gradually increase it. :)

for the future, you might want to look at an electric metronome that can help you with these kinds of things. I have one that allows you to adjust the settings so that you can keep your bpm but still hear the sixteenth notes with the accent. It is a Korg Metronome MA-30 if your interested.

just a suggestion :D

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a familiar mantra for pianists, yet true perfection remains elusive. Research suggests that a robotic exoskeleton could assist pianists during the practice phase in increasing speed in difficult passages by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”. Read more
