Pieces using the highest C
on: July 16, 2005, 12:20:23 AM
What pieces do you know of that use the highest C on the piano?

Two come to mind for me - Rachmaninoff's 3rd concerto, and Scriabin's
 "White Mass"piano sonata (no. 7).

1) Prokofiev first concerto

2) Sorabji - Fantasia from OC, it actually says C# in the score, but I think it was meant to be a natural, since the note does not exist on the piano

3) Le Jardin Parfume.

4)  Prokofiev concerto no. 3

off the top of my head.

Due to the piano limitations of 17th and 18th century i bet no piece written between those centuries uses the highest C.

The masterpiece tell the performer what to do, and not the performer telling the piece what it should be like, or the cocomposer what he ought to have composed.

I believe one of the Tcherepnin Bagatelles, Op. 5 uses the highest C.

I wonder if Koji knows whether that is for real, or a typo.

villa-lobos 'Festa no sertao' has a nice lyrical section, where the left hand plays the melody and the right hand plays a river of notes on top of it. It goes all the way up to the highest C. And if I don't remember wrong, the following piece from this suite (ciclo brasileiro) uses the lowest A, but thats probably more common.
