Two different Schumann Symphonic Etudes Op. 13???

what's going on?  I listened to a bunch of recordings and there seem to be two similiar but definitely different Symphonic Etudes.  Does anyone know what this is all about?

Well you do know that there is a direction in the score that says that the player can modify the music to his liking....



No, not really.  But that would be neat though (of course, in the 1800s pianists actually did this!)

2 versions do exist.

The first is from 1837 and is less frequently played. 

Schumann later revised the work in the 1852 version, deleting movements, and reworking movements.
