Thalberg assignment

You assignment, if you choose to accept it....

Go find the most famous piece of music Thalberg wrote and tell us about it.

It could be any music that he wrote as long as its the most widely known piece.  And if it's not for piano, try to get the most famous piano piece he wrote too.

I want to know about this piece!  Maybe in a few weeks I'll do this.  Right now I'm moving to a new house very very far away and I'm overwhelmed.  Someone else--find the piece!

I guess the only piece that anyone might have heard of is the Fantasy on Rossini's Moses Op33. This is what Thalberg played in his famous duel against Liszt.

I am not very good at describing things so i will quote a contemporary that heard Thalberg play it.

"He began slowly and quietly but with such a composure allowing a certain degree of excitement to be felt. One could feel the storm gathering behind these seemingly quiet tones. Gradually, the movement accelerated, its expression became clearer and with the aid of a series of increasing crescendos, he kept the listener in breathless excitement until finally a tonal outburst literally poured over the audience electrifying it in an indescribable manner"

This piece has been out of print for so long, I am going to attach it.

I can see nothing in the rules that forbids.

I take it Thalberg was big into transcriptions?  If that had caught on, maybe I would have heard of him more.  Interesting.

classicalarchive.net has something like 10 of his pieces in midi format to listen to. I don't know which one was his most popular, but one is labeled as his personal war-horse.
