my left hand won't move!!!
on: July 13, 2003, 06:15:24 AM
hey i've always been extremely right-handed and my left hand has always felt kinda clumsy but it's never really mattered 2 much b4.....but now im learning chopin's scherzo No. 2 in Bb- and the arpegios in the left hand just sound really sloppy. i was wondering if anyone knew any special secrets that might help out here or if i just have 2 stick it out and hope it gets better with practice?

hey dj,

i'm working on this scherzo also.  that left hand part is definitely hard.  and i also i have yet to master it also.  But it definitely has to be played with very good articulation of the fingers.  So I think practicing this part left hand alone slow with exagerrated finger articualtions is good.  And also i think it is good to make sure you are moving your arm properly so that your fingers can lift articualte more freely.  Personally, I pose my arm on the first note with supination of the forearm and make kind of a cross with the first note so that the other notes become closer to each other.    Well anyways this is how i play this part

Hi ! I had exactly the same problem than you last years. My left hand was REALLY STUPID. Last summer, I decided to do exercices to improve my hand. Believe me, it worked wuite well. DO HANON AND SCHMITT exercices while repeat the fingers which are the best stupid (especially 4-5).  You can find the sheets music of these excercices on this site : www.sheetmusicarchives.com
Good luck to you ! ::) ;)

There is nothing more valuable than the Hanon exercises; I would especially recommend the five finger stretched diminished 7th and dominant 7th exercises in the 2nd section.  I like mixing patterns together with harmonic combinations of each, a simple example being Cdim7 to B7, in four octaves, and perhaps placing runs of the adjoining major and harmonic scales in between somwhere.  The only reason I am telling you this is that because this exercise IN PARTICULAR drastically improved my left hand's accuracy, reach, and touch; before these drills, it was also clumsy and felt mentally detached from my brain.  You might try taking the first 8 measures from Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu (a nice left handed stretch though a basic minor progression) and working it through the circle of fifths in a way you see fit (muddy or not).  Those sweeping left hand arpeggios in all keys will get you there, if you are not madly bored from something like that.  It makes for good practico.  Do whatever you like with your right hand...

Although I often feel I have the same problem, I played this Scerzo last year and didn't find it too challenging - are we talking about the section which is (in my edition) pages 3-4 (first time)? Just swamp it in pedal and play it more quietly than the tune - I'm not being lazy, that's how it's done on all my recordings too and it sounds fab,
