*cries* I HATE my new teacher!
on: July 22, 2005, 01:33:31 AM
-.-

Well I talked to the person that will be teaching me at school for the next three years (my school is cooler than yours; it's free, a middle/highschool and has a graduate program ^^ aka an awesome fine arts school).  Anyways, I showed him my repertoire and he hated it!  He said too much modern/obscure compositions so he's assigned me this huge amount of work I have to do before I can go back to doing what I want.  This is what I have to do:

Finish the Chopin Etudes Op. 25
Finish the Rachmaninov Preludes Op. 32
Finish the Rachmaninov Etudes Tableaux Op. 39
Finish the Ligeti Etudes Book I (only cause I begged him to let me do some modern stuff)
Three more Debussy Preludes to make it an even five?  five isnt even!!!
A major classical work (not necissarily in the key A Major =P)
A major Romantic Work (he won't allow Apres un Lecture du Dante =("
A major work by Ravel
A major work by Brahms
A major work by Bach or Handel
A major work by Scriabin

what is this guy's problem?!?  I already do Miroirs ><  But nuuu... Sonatine, Gespard de la Nuit or Valses Nobles et Sentimentales.  and BRAHMS!  I hate that guy!  This is a nightmare ><  And now I can't do my fun concerti -.-  I suddenly hate male teachers!  I don't like this at all =(  And he won't count my Brahms piece towards my major romantic work either!  What's this guy's problem?  Maybe he hates me.  Also he says all the pieces I choose have to be common rep!  This is gonna take forever...

Debussy: (already know book 1 no. 7 and book 2 no. 12) Book 2 Nos. 2, 6, and 8
Classical: Schubert Sonata D. 894
Romantic: Schumann Fantasy Pieces Op. 12
Ravel: Sonatine (god this is going to kill me; ravel is mean to me ><)
Brahms: Fantasies Op. 116
Bach or Handel: don't know don't care
Scriabin: Sonata No. 5

sigh.... I guess I need to ask you guys what a good piece by bach or handel is.  Some French Suite or some BS like that I guess -.-  This is just depressing...  Well tell me what you guys think of my choices.  He's such a hardass he probably won't let me use Schubert as a Classical composer too, in which case I'll get stuck doing the Mozart Variations K. 573 which really scares me.

But seriously!  ME?  BRAHMS??? omg no....

So what do you guys think of this teacher?  Is he mean or is he right?  Should I murder him?

He sounds absolutely wonderful.
YAY BRAHMS!
btw all of Bach totally rules... pick a suite at random.

I know the type of teacher. Sometimes they go on power trips and put you under pressure they know you can't handle. However, if he doesn't kill you, he will make you better. If I were you, I'd do a French Suite, since I prefer them over the English ones. But that's me, so you should really listen to them for your own preference. But if you really hate playing Bach, I don't know what to tell you. It's really instrumental in a pianist's repertoire. Oh, yeah, I think you have to change your signature regarding what you're "currently learning".  ;)

Dude, Skeptopotamus, that is absolutely mind-numbingly insane. If I remember correctly you know 3 chopin etudes from op. 25 and three Rachamninoff Etudes-Tableaux from op. 39.

What the hell is wrong with this guy?

You may enjoy the Partitas (i particularly like no. 1) more than the French or English suites. And the Chromatic fantasy is also a good one.

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

The Partitas are INCREDIBLE (except 3, 5, which are the weaker ones of the 6). The 6th is the best, imho.

Bernhard: have you heard Lipatti's recording of the 1st? It's sounds like Gould...before Gould knew what Gould sounded like.  ;)

There is so much great Bach out there.

Indeed Lipatti is amazing. Shame he died so early.

My favourite recording of Partita 1 is by Rosalyn Tureck. The prelude is unsurpassed.

I have ordered Richard Goode. I heard good things about him.

I was never much taken by the suites (I like the FS better than the ES), but the partitas are amongst my favourite Bach keyboard pieces. :D

okies I have heard alot about the Chromatic Fantasy; I'll check that out.

I've sort of done the chopin op. 25, but the only ones I would ever play in public are 5/6/11, and from the rach i know 1/2/6/8/9

And as far as the ligeti goes, i know 4/6 (fanfares and automne a varsovie).  This guy has basically given me 2 years of work ><

well i'm at least glad im not the only one who thinks this guy is totally crazy.

Standard repertoire? That's pathetic, as if the world needs more renditions of Chopin Op. 25.

If you want to undermine him with obscurity though...

A Major work by Ravel - Sorabji transcription of the Rhapsodie Espagnole
A Major work by Bach - Sorabji transcription of the Chromatic Fantasy, or the Busoni transcription of the friggen Dracula organ toccata (d minor?)
A Major work by Scriabin - Preludes Op. 74, or Sonatas #6, 8

Skepto, sorry about your plight.  I know you love the obscure, so for the Bach/baroque, would he let you get away with Clara Schumann’s 3 Fugues on a Theme of Bach?  How about Reger's Telemann variations?    ;)

hehehe I called him at 6AM today XD  He didn't like that at all; yay!  We went over the pieces I chose and he said I couldn't do the Schubert as I expected and he recommends I do the Mozart K. 576, which I'm not particularly abject to so I guess I have to do that -.-  Also, he said I couldn't do the Fantasies AND the Sonatine; I have to choose one of the nastier works by one of them, which means I either have to do Gespard de la Nuit or Brahms Sonata 1/3 or paganini variations -.-  I'm (shiver) gonna go with Gespard since I've already spent some time playing through that, though it did totally kill me last time I tried at it.  Actually the Mozart will take a good deal less time than the Schubert so I guess that's kind of nice... I guess.  Oh and I asked him about The Enchanted Garden and he said he doesn't know what it is and I made some nasty-snide comment but alas!  He was too tired to get it so it was wasted -.-

It will be good to do Brahms...

You can't do brahms half-assed...
You have to play it perfectly or it will be obviously poor.

I used to hate Brahms cause it sounds so easy but is so hard...Now I have learned my lesson.

It's awesome.

Maybe he things you have great potential and sees you as a uncut gem. Or maybe he things you are just too full of yourself and wants to cut you down.
