Scriabin Op.2 No.1
on: July 24, 2005, 02:33:12 PM
I play this Scriabin etude in C# Minor. For those of you who have the score, here's the question:

At measure 26, when the main melody comes in at forte, there is a three-note arpeggio in the LH just like the opening measure. Is it feasable to add a grace note (the lowest c# on the keyboard) in order to enhance the melancholy nature of this piece and to diversify this bar and the one at the beginning? I have heard this low note played in some of Horowitz's recordings of this etude.

Thanks,
Phil

I play this Scriabin etude in C# Minor.
Most typically do ;)

For this particular etude I would actually go against what I'd normally say and tell you it's not a bad idea.
1)  Scriabin's music in the first place seems somewhat impromptu and very varied - tactful additions seem to fit well.
2)  The beat is a gliss already and he often created this type of sound.
3)  This seems to be a tactful addition.
4) I too have the Horowitz recording and it sounds powerful - but I wouldn't do it just because he did.
I would not do this in the first bar though - too much too soon.

Thank you. I know not to play it in the first bar, but it just makes sense when that theme comes back and is way more powerful than it was to give it more power, an extra *oomph!* if you get my drift.

Yes, in fact that is a good idea... Thank YOU! It sounds more powerful. ;)
