How frequently do you move (not cancel, but switch around) a student's lesson? I don't mean all the switches you make, I mean just the average for any given student.

How frequently do you move a lesson?
on: July 25, 2005, 05:10:23 AM
I am asking this because the summer has been very inconsistant for me, and I've had to move one of my students 3 times now in just the last six weeks. The parent has been very understanding and flexible, but I was wondering how often all of you end up doing this.

I let them know well in advance if I have a conflict such as a symphony rehearsal.  I rarely move students last minute due to my schedule.  However, students are always switching around in my studio, which I don't mind.  My office hours are what they are.  As long as they call me in advance and tell me what time they want to switch to, or who they are switching with that's fine with me.  I just like to know in advance so I'm not sitting there waiting, or so I can use their now-available time to schedule another student into for the week.

Summer lessons are way more flexible for me, but in the fall, I almost never switch lessons

If you switch a lot, I would think they should be able to switch a lot too.

I look as far ahead as possible and plan by semester.  If something is in the way of a normal lesson time, I let them know before the semester even starts.  If switching times for those occasions works, great.  If not, it's just skipped.  They know about it far in advance.  The execption is emergencies.

It is kind of boring to stick to the lessons so strictly but I figure I've scheduled them, I need to keep them and follow through with my policies.  You have to be careful not to book yourself up so tight that you can't use your time flexibly if you want/need to once in a while.
