Collaborative Composition
on: July 25, 2005, 07:22:32 PM
Okay so i was thinking...How about we start something new to get creative juices flowing.

Someone starts off by composing a theme of a certain length. Now Interested Parties compose a short piece made out of that theme. Then we record, post, and then have a nice party discussing each other's works. Then maybe compile it. Then someone starts the ball rolling again.

The piece will be around min 2 minutes?
And must feature the piano prominently - this means Piano solo, piano with ensemble if you wish, or duets 4hand or 2handx2. or any number of pianos (8piano concerto, anyone?)

And, i guess i'd prefer the theme to be modal.

Anyway, what do you guys think? I think it could be a fun thing, if it takes off. And Maybe we can push for a composition board.

Note that i'm not actually starting it... just gathering interest:) Any ideas can be put forward to Cheesy

That's a great idea! Or, someone could provide a theme, and each person participating could write a variation on it.

Sounds fun.

But since you, Dazzer, started this topic and thus the (first) composition. Maybe you should start with choosing the instruments and maybe the style. And it would be nice if you had a theme.

I suggest someone starts with providing a theme. Then the second poster does something with it. Then the third adds something. And maybe people should change stuff, restructure it. Etc.

I guess we will soon get into a fight about how it should become :) Which is probably a good thing.

We could have several people doing their own variation with the same theme, but then we get several individual pieces sharing a theme instead of a real fusion of ideas.
(Though I would really love it when everyone on this forum wrote a variation on my theme. :) )

instead of composing a new theme, how about using the paganini theme, or la folia?

if it was a famous, and inspirational theme, then i would think more people would be interested.

well i guess that'd be taking the easy way out...

But if its a famous theme people might tend to LEAN towards what's already been done... stifling creativity, so to speak.

The problem is that who do we know will post next? I don't think it'll take a few minutes just to write one you know... Its not as simple as the Word Association thread where all we had to do was come up with a word.so yes, the idea still needs a bit of polish, but i think its workable.

i'd really like to have alot more people interested before we try anything.
