Favorite prelude?
on: July 25, 2005, 08:38:09 PM
Hey everybody.

There are a lot of preludes out there (Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin and Bach come to mind). I want to know what your favorites are and why. (just out of curiosity I guess...) Post the composer, opus number, and name if it has one. You can list as many as you wish. My personal favorites are:

Chopin: Prelude Op.28 No.15 'Raindrop', Op.28 No.4 in E minor, Op.28 No.10 in C# minor

Debussy: Preludes "The Sunken Cathedral", "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair", "Puck's Dance"

Scriabin: Prelude Op.11 No.14 in E-flat minor

Rachmaninoff: Prelude Op.32 No.5 in G major, Op.32 No.10 in B minor, Op.32 No.12 in G# minor, Op.23 No.4 in D major, Op.23 No.5 in G minor

Bach: WTC Prelude in C minor Book I, B-flat Major Book I

Thanks,

Phil

Scriabin: Op.42,5 Affanato- I'm still catching my breath.
Also Op.67,2- never before have I encountered a piece that actually makes me feel like I'm being pulled to the ground (with its descending chromatic planing).
Bach: WTC 1- F Minor. WTC 2- C Major.

I think Op.42 No.5 is an etude, but it's intensely beautiful nonetheless.
