What style of music do you like to play?

chopin is ealry romantic, rachmaninov is not typically 20th century, he was maybe a little behind his time, he was maybe the last romantic..

but anyway, i think romanticism was the best thing to ever happen to music, so much emotional and freedom.

Rachmaninov was born in the very late Romantic, and mid nationalist, but his compositions were mainly composed during the 20th century.

i dont think of music in terms of time periods, i think of them as stylistic periods...and rachmaninov was definitly a true romantic, and also i feel that '20th century' is a bad term to use because it really encompasses everything - many composers even reverted to neo-baroque, neo-classical, and neo-romantic styles.

that would depend what you mean by 'it', 'modern' would be better, but dont you get my point about the modern era of music being more diverse than ever?

all im saying is that i dont think 1 category suits it all, but maybe many other pianists feel it can all be lumped into 1 thing.

I like (in order) late Romantic music, transitional (from classical to romantic -Beethoven, Schubert), music with a Spanish flare,  Baroque and French music.

I wish I could have clicked 2. Romantic and Baroque are by far my favorite styles to play. There are a handful of Classical works I like, but those are mostly Beethoven and arguably a marriage of Baroque/Romantic music anyway.

i can't restrict myself to one answer there. because i don't particularly favour any period of music over another, it really depends on my mood. everything except jazz and pop i play, i couldn't limit myself to one nor say which i favoured over the other...

The exact same thing happens to me, one day I feel like I should sit down and read through Bach's WTC, some of Handel's works, and Couperin's Ordres... The other day, I will read through Brahms, Chopin, Rachmaninoff. I don't have a favorite one... It seems like I am guided by something each day.

Here is a man after my own heart. I love baroque and romantic music; your classical composers I can pretty much take or leave with the notable exception of Beethoven. As for Rachmaninoff, I'm not sure you can say he's behind his time. He's surely romantic in style, but with strong modern influences, and can be very nationalistic at times, so he could fit in any of the last 3 categories. I'd generally describe him as "romantic, going on modern" and Beethoven as "classical, going on romantic".
