Marching Band Repertoire
on: August 04, 2005, 11:17:13 PM
What are some good piano or orchestral pieces that would make great marching band / drum corp show?  Our school marching band has done The Planets, and Russian show (Mussorgsky Pictures, R-K Promenade), Tchaik show, New World, and will be doing Firebird Suite next year (they did it before).  Planets and Firebird are the greatest shows we have ever done, our whole school remembers it.

I was thinking Totentanz would make a kick-ass show.  Prokofiev too.  What are some other really good reps for a marching band show?

Adding to that, I went to Indianapolis for a gian Drum Corp show.  Some classicalish reps:

Boston Crusaders - Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring; Candid Overture; Copland Promise of Living; Ode to Joy
Glassmen - New World Symphony
Mandarins - Khatchaturian Spartacus Adagio; Rach Paganini Variations; Rach Symphonic Dance 3
Phantom Regiment - American in Paris; Rhapsody in Blue
Santa Clara - Shostakovich 12; random Russian Christmas music

Rachmaninoff's Prelude in G minor Op. 23 No. 5 would be great for marching band. I believe it has been transcribed. Chopin's "Militaire" Polonaise would be great too.

I have nothing to suggest at the moment, but great thread.  I was in a drum corps for years (I refused to play any mallets, though) and it was a fantastic experience.  I've seen most of the groups you mentioned.  I'll think about this...

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
