ABRSM - aural component
on: August 08, 2005, 01:49:00 AM
Hi!
Don't know if this topic has already been posted somewhere but I've currently a problem with one of the aural components of the ABRSM examination. I'm currently preparing a 7-year-old student for an exam, and I can't seem to get her to tell the difference between a piece in duple time and a piece in triple time. I've tried with accenting the first beat of each bar, but that does not seem to work. Any suggestions?

HMMMMM.... I'm just totally shooting from  the hip here, but.....

How about words?  Have the student say "Strawberry" over and over again for triple time--three syllables.

"Watermelon" for 4/4

"apple" for 2/4

You don't have to use this suggestion if you think it's too.....I dunno....fruity?

Mm was trying to get her to listen out to how many unaccented beats are there in between the accented beats (duple time if there's one and triple if there's 2 since we're not really concerned about whether the piece is in 2/4 or 4/4). Think this is pretty much what you're trying to get them to do with the 'strawberry' and the 'apple'. However, I think she's got difficulties trying to determine how many unaccented beats there are between the accented beats.
Thanks for your speedy reply anyway =)
