Symbolism in Liszt's Mephisto
on: August 08, 2005, 04:14:13 PM
I have heard things like that the fifths in the beginning symbolize the Devil tuning his violin. I have heard more things like this...but can't remember...

Does anyone know what parts of the piece symbolize what? etc.

D.

I heard that it's supposed to be 666 seconds, and most recordings are just around 11 minutes and a bit...and 6 I think is the number of the devil... I think?
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

Read "The Dance in the Village Inn" from "Faust" by Nikolaus Lenau if you want to understand the symbolism in this piece.

I can't seem to find it online...know where I can read it (in English...)? It's in a book I have but it's in German, I think.

thanks,
