I don't even own a tape recorder and wanted to record some audio. Can I use my miniDV cam?

I'm sure you can - but I'm afraid I don't know how.
I've got a friend who knows how to do it; I'll ask him for help.

Well, you can't JUST record audio. You'll just record it as normal video and export it as audio later in the computer. It would be simple if you had an editing program such as After Effects or Premiere, but I'm pretty sure you can do it with Windows Movie Maker if you don't. You go to record, and instead of choosing video, choose audio only. Make sure you uncheck the "record time limit" and choose "high quality" under setting. After you're done it will save your audio as a .wma, which is not what we want obviously. So download a converter. I just found this one off google:
https://www.convert-wma-mp3.com/?sstrg=freeware%20wma%20to%20mp3%20converter
It's free and might have limitations. If it does just search for other ones. They are always some freeware apps out there with no restrictions. I just didn't bother looking.
Then again, if you have a decent editing program, I could tell you how to export it there. Or, if you have a SoundBlaster Live or Audigy soundcard, you could open up your wma in Creative WaveStudio and export it there. There are many other ways. Good luck.
