Easier instruments to learn after knowing piano?
on: July 25, 2003, 06:33:48 AM
I'm in the early process of learning piano, but my instructor says I'm coming along well so i'm fairly confident with my ability and know that I will stick with it.  However taking on piano makes me wonder what other instruments would be cool to learn.  I'm interested in guitar, cello, and maybe some others.  In your experience though can anyone tell me if any instruments are easier to learn after having learned piano?

Cool, like would those large drum sets be easier to handle?  That's the only thing I might really want to learn in percussion.  I always thought that would be really hard for some reason.  All that coordination.

When I was 8 I started piano lessons.  A couple of years later, I picked the clarinet to play in the band.  By then, I had learned all about notes, rests, TWO (2) clefs, and playing some music.  On the clarinet you only have one clef and one note at a time.  It was a total piece of cake to learn, and to this day I think the clarinet is way easier than the piano, even with problems of tuning, embersure(sp?), etc.

My  answer to your question is YES - probably any wind instrument will seem easy now to learn.  What do you other guys think?

but see wind instruments are boring.... only 1 melody line and pretty much one sound all the time (take Kenny G for example- everyone knows just how long they can stand one of his CD's all the way through). with percussion, theres:
snare, bass, bells, chimes, wind chimes, tambourine, marimba, steel drums, drumset, cymbals, etc.  I wouldnty start off learning the drumset, because yes it does take alot of cooridnation, start with just a simple snare drum first at least.

Have you ever played a wind instrument?  I'm guessing you havn't, or at least not well, because it is definately not boring.  I agree if you're playing the piano and you have one melody line with no harmony it would get quite boring.  But when playing a wind instrument it is completely different.  And also you usually are not playing by yourself, but with an entire orchestra or band which is quite an experience.

And comeon Kenny G is the only person you can think of when it comes to a wind player?  That's a horrible example, I tend to not like kenny G at all, his playing is way too "commercial" if I can say that for me.  But there are so many amazing artists and orchestras you can't narrow them down to the very non exciting Kenny G.  And if you think that playing an instrument like clarinet or saxaphone wouldn't take as much commitment to get good you're dead wrong.

If you want to be amazing you're going to have to practice, a lot.  But if you just want to play a little, than yes most wind instruments are quite an easy jump from piano.

But IMHO I would say each major instrument whether it be piano, or drum set, or trumpet, or sax, are all the same in difficutly once you get past the basics, and are able to "play".  To get good at any of them takes the same commitment and hard work that most of us use to learn the piano.

If you're only good technically, try the organ - it doesn't require musicality,  ;)

On the contrary, it takes great musicality and knowledge to play the organ and not sound unmusical. Have you listened to any Vierne or Dupre, or for that matter any real organ music, eddie92099? Let us please keep our insults to non-keyboard instruments from now on.
