Great stuff! I am not sure if I would call it "Modern" or "Contemprary", though. Sounds to me that it would qualify as regular Jazz.

If you like the amalgamation of Jazz and Classic, check out Claude Bolling or Aydin Esen (not to mention Keith Jarrett).

The thing about modern music that I don't like is that it has jazz influences. And I HATE Jazz, I don't think of it as music (Don't flame me, it is an opinion) I can't even listen to Debussy because of his jazzyness.

Sorabji is one of the modern composers that I actually like.

I can perfectly accept that you don`t like jazz. But you don`t even think that it is music? Ehat is your definition of music.? Every answer is good enough to me as long as it has some logic in it.

Of course it is music. But I don't think of it as music, all I hear are these awful melodies, 15 min solos and instruments like Sax that makes me want to slit my own wrist. I never said I didn't like any music coming from the 20th Century... Just not that serialistic and impressionistic stuff... Stuff that lacks a sense of tonality.

However I do love Jazz and I certainly loved the Paganini Variations - Good find.

Has anyone ever heard about origins of the name "jazz".  I saw this documentary on the history of jazz and apparantly it used to be called "jass".  They made the switch because apparantly the J would get rubbed off/fall of and the drummer would be left with the words "Ass Band" written on his bass drum.  Thus... Jazz.

I don't even understand how you can't understand this. It is a style a way to play ... exactly ! They play in the style of the jazz, the way they play it is jazzy. It sounds really like jazz music.

Improvisation is creating music on the spot. Composing is improvisation, sometimes edited. So Kapustin's Toccatina for example is as much jazz as any big band arrangement of Four Brothers.
