Spanish style
on: August 11, 2005, 11:20:25 PM
Who are some 20th century composers who wrote works in a Spanish style (although not necessarily being Spanish themselves)? I can think of Sorabji, Ravel, Debussy, Villa Lobos off the top of my head.

I'm looking for 20th century pieces in the same vein as Sorabji's Quasi Habarnera/Fantasie Espagnole and Villa Lobos' Hommage a Chopin, basically slower, moody Spanish-esque pieces. Please don't suggest anything by Ginastera. Mmk, thanks guys!

Villa-Lobos: Valses da Dor (Sad, haunting, moving piece in which you'll can't get the melody out of your head.)

Anton Bilotti - American/Italian composer who wrote alot of upper-intermediate works, like "spanish dance". However his "A Night in Granada" is one of his more advance, less played work.

De Falla - Serenata andaluza, another serenata, Nocturno, and Hommage to Debussy

Joaquin Rodrigo - 2 Beracuse

Turina - The Sad Dog from Le Cirque

You might want to explore the music of Mompou, his pieces are somewhat in the Impressionist vein: Alicia de Larrocha recorded an album of his pieces about 10 years ago on EMI. Some of them were written for her and dedicated to her; it's quality stuff, and often very slow and moody.  :)

Well, Granados was in the 20th century for a while, not too long, though.  It's pretty romantic Spanish music with French influence.  Hot stuff.
