When a  pianist in a hotel or restaurant plays sort of a sleeping elevator type tune in the background what type of music is that is it jazz or something else.

How would we know? Its probably pop music. Or mabye elevator music would be a better description.

i know exactly what nixo is talking about..but i cant put my finger on it either..elevator music is probably the best way of putting it..its not popular music..as no on would be familiar with the music..its intended to keep a mellow easy on the ear atmosphere...a foundation for conversation..the music wasnt intended to actually be listened to i dont think (when played at places like hotels)..but just to set the atmosphere...the best analogy i could give is...kind of like a strawberry air freshener in a lobby you gently pick up on while you enter the building..sublte..but there..

That is a good question.

IT is just music that borrows influences from all kinds of styles..

I have heard a lot of jazz influence in "elevator music"

It's kind of like a Jazz, pop, fusion, instrumental collage

I believe the technical term is "Muzak" ;)

Is it related to Furniture music (musique d’ameublement)? Eric Satie I think described it as music you are not focused listening to but listening to in the background of what you are doing.

most of the time it probably is, it depends on what he is playing.  Pianists dont only play jazz at hotels

Lucky you. It drives me mad. For the most part, (a mon avi) they're dried up wash musician who havent aspired to reach anything more with themselves or music. They dont understand, really and truly what music is, or what its purpose serves. They usually resort to either playing themes from the lion king or richard clayderman. Its kitch, and overdone, and does music no justice whatsoever.
I dont play an instrument, I play the piano.

Muzak drives me nuts, whether live or canned.  I don't know that I would lump all of the hotel pianists into the category that danyalswan suggests, but the "genre" as a whole (if we can dignify it with that term) is yucky.  I can't just listen to music in the background - I have to be involved with it in some way.

At least there's no danger of our being replaced by canned music anytime soon!
