invention 14 video
on: August 15, 2005, 07:32:28 PM
I have to admit that the tempo is slow. I slowed it down in an attempt to stop making stupid mistakes. I seem to have a bad case of video fear. anyways, here is the view of both hands.

if nothing else let me know what you think of my technique. it is weird to see yourself play.

PS sorry for the vid being on its side. it is the only way the camera would lay.

Hi Bolliver,

I enjoyed your playing!  Your tempo seemed fine.  I played this in a student recital many years ago and another student played it, too.  I played it faster and a bit more disconnected, and she took it legato at your tempo.  It sounded good either way!

Your technique looks good.  My only suggestion might be to vary the dynamics a little more.  (Sometimes dynamics don't come through too well on recordings, either.)  You know, play one phrase at one dynamic, then alternate with another in "levels" rather than dramatic crescendoes, etc.  Take a slight ritard the last measure, as you ended a little abruptly.

Good work!

thanks for the reply. I do have a hard time varying the levels of dynamics. One minute I am being told that I play dry and the next I play Bach like Beethoven. I haven't found the middle ground yet I guess.

Finding the right interpretation is hard!  Maybe listen to a number of artists playing Bach.  You have a great start, with good clarity and steadiness of tempo.  Just a bit of those changes in dynamic levels with the thought that Bach would have played these on harpsichord.

Good luck!  Teresa

Bach played on harpsichord, so he couldn't use dynamics, so Bach used a lot of articulation, that's something I miss a bit in your video. Everything is legato, you can phrase it more, get your hand a bit from the keyboard after playing the theme. This will improve making it sound like a two-handed invention.

Try to listen to each hand, so that you can hear the theme in each hand. Now I mainly hear the right hand. If you hear it yourself, we can hear it too, which will greatly improve everything.

And personally I wouldn't use legato on the 8th notes, but the thing what's between legato and staccato (forgot the word) .

The things that were really good were your dynamics, and the clearity, so keep it that way :) .

If you go to Listen to Samples, and you click the 14th, you can listen to Schiff playing it.

You can't vary dynamics on a harpsichord the way you can on a piano, but you have foot pedals that alter the sound of the keyboards.  So you can change the sound but only in "levels."  No gradual crescendos, etc, but dymnamics nonetheless.
