Clementi sonatas
on: August 16, 2005, 02:49:39 AM
I just bought myself a book with selected sonatas,  Do you have anything to say about this repertoire?  Which one is "Forsaken Dido"?  Do you have a favorite?
Money does not make happiness, but it can buy you a piano.  :)

In a long overdue departure from the Romantics, i recently learned the Sonata in F# Minor Op25 No5 (the one Horowitz played).

As good as any of the Mozart Sonatas in my opinion.

Will definately try a couple of others.

F# minor is a great Sonata , someday I will get to the b minor Sonata, op.40 #?, my favorite Clementi piece.

Horowitz played quite a few Clementi Sonatas, from the 1940's on; but Clementi never caught on like all of Horowitz' other "discoveries". Funny, when this guy played Scriabin and Scarlatti everyone else did too, but when he played Clementi, no response from pianists ....makes you wonder, most composers would give a lot to have an advocate like Horowitz! Is it that Clementi is not a good composer? He certainly isn't the worst composer...

What think y'all? Inquiring mind wants to know... :D

Clementi Sonatas would be a welcome change of pace for the classical repertoire, as would Weber's Sonatas for the romantic repertoire.   ;)

That is an excellent idea.

Play Scarlatti instead of Bach
       Clementi instead of Mozart
       Hummel instead of Beethoven
       Weber instead of Chopin
        Thalberg instead of Liszt
       Bortkiewicz instead of Rachmaninov

Don't forget about John Baptist Cramer, who is mostly known for his studies, but also wrote some nice sonatas - he's not quite up to Beethoven, IMO, but similar period to substitute.  He also was part of the London Piano School with Clementi!

OMG I agree with everything except I prefer Chopoin, Liszt, and Rachmaninov (for his concerti). And yes, I have heard  mnay compositions by Thalberg, and Bortkiewicz. I like Bortkiewicz's Elegie, but Rachmaninoff cant be beaten with his Second Piano Concerto.

I love the Op. 34 no. 1 and am starting to learn the first movement.
Gilels made a great recording:

It never ceases to amuse me that someone can quote a 10 year old post.

Anyway, my opinion in this case has not changed.

I love Clementi Sonatas.
They seem more intrigueing than Haydn and more fun than Mozart.
I am definitely going to play one for my finals in a year or 2.
The possible choices of Beethoven and Mozart are not that fun to me.

Just happened to be listening to Op.50 Nr.3 when I saw this post. Op.40 Nr.2 is also interesting.
There is a lot to like.
