Unavailable piano rolls of liszt pupils
on: August 16, 2005, 06:04:31 PM
HI,
about 9 years ago i chanced upon a spanish radio station which was broadcasting a programme by the american musicologist harold schonberg called earwitness. it featured early recordings and rolls of liszt pupils and their contemporaries such as freidheim, von sauer, Degreef, siloti, Ethel Legiska etc

During the programme, they  repeatedly stressed that the recordings were not commercially available, and whilst some of them crop up on the pearl label "pupils of liszt" cd, others i have never found, . luckily i had a blank tape handy, so made poor qualtiy copies of the tracks (im not sure if this is legal - if they are not commercially available, is there any copyright? they date back to the first 20 years of the 20 century).

in particular, there is an alexander Siloti 1921 version of liszts 12 rhapsody which is startling in its virtuosity and effectiveness, (the siloti website makes no reference to this recording, instead bemoans his lack of recorded output), a hungarian woman called Yolander Mero playing the tempest and von sauer playing Mazeppa.

can anyone shed any light on these recordings?

Thank you very much - in fact the site doesnt list the pieces by siloti or sauer because they are on rolls, but gives a link to the following "rollography", where the pieces are listed. i assume they are not available commercially.it certainly makes no reference to them.

Here is another link for you.

There are some welter-mignon rolls available on CD. I have a Horowitz one of him playing the Mozart-Liszt-Busoni-Figaro. Don't sound like him though.

I have a pdf file of their catalogue if you would like it. There are over 7000 rolls

As far as I understand it's not the real audio record?
Are there any real audio-records of Siloti?

Very little exists of Siloti playing as i understand.

There are some fragments on you tube

I think there are also some piano rolls and they "can" be reasonably honest.
