Questions for Prospetive Students?
on: August 17, 2005, 05:47:40 AM
Hello everyone! I've recently been considering the option of getting a teacher ( and have been procrastinating ever since ). Now, I have a fairly good understanding of how to find a teacher and I've thought up what I consider to be an adequate set of questions that would guage the compatiblity and effectiveness of a possible teacher. It was in the course of this process that the idea occurred to me that I myself may have some questions to answer. I hate to think that these initial interviews would be one-sided and the thought of being unprepared for such questions is even more frightening. So, when a student walk through your door, inquiring about a your potential services, what questions would you like to ask them in turn?

I'd like to express my gratitude in advance for all insights afforded.

I'm not a pianist, I just act like one online.

I usually ask them exactly what they want in a teacher...

I would ask why they would like to learn the piano

What kind of music is in thier stereo at home right now

what other activities they are interested in

If they have a piano

Having said all of that, I usually learn the most about them when I ask what they want in a teacher.

Some students say immediately "I want a teacher who lets me cancel lessons and not pay, and he needs to be easygoing and playing needs to be fun" then I refer them

Well practicing piano is not fun...it's work...

That helps a lot. And, believe me, after all the delay in piano study I am ready and most willing to work.  ;)

Great, have you thought of your questions for the teacher?

Here are a few questions I like to ask :

What other activities are you involved in ?

Do you prefer team activities or individual activities ?

What is it about team/individual activities that makes it more enjoyable than the other for you ?

What are your study habits for school-work like ?

What are your favorite TV shows ?

What are your favorite books ?

What do you consider to be the most adventurous activity in life ?

What do you consider to be the activity of highest risk ?

What is something you have never done before, but would like to try ?

Do you have any pets for which you are responsible ?

What's your favorite "chore" around the house ?  ;D

What are some of your favorite foods ?

What are some of your favorite restaurants ?

Where is your favorite vacation spot ?

How do you spend your holidays ?
