Op 31 with Ashkenazy
The masterpiece tell the performer what to do, and not the performer telling the piece what it should be like, or the cocomposer what he ought to have composed.

That was not easy, I love them all, but finally had to go with # 3 op.39. I  equally enjoy the recordings of Argerich and Rubinstein. I heard Emannuel Ax play all 4 a couple of years ago; astonishing. :o The playing of a really great artist on the order of Horowitz, Serkin, Arrau or Rubinstein, he's one of the new immortals; thank God there's someone carrying the torch!

I absolutely love Rubinstein's recording of all four. I don't think I can vote though, because the 2nd and 3rd are tied as my favs. I don't really like the first one that much. I'm also currently working on the second one, and it's really fun.

Pogorelich's account of the 4 scherzi is absolutely fascinating

2-1-3-4 in that order.

Richter and Pogorelich for No. 1 (I'd have also included Horowitz if he didn't make that particularly crappy one, don't know what year)

Zimerman for No. 2, Cziffra as well... perhaps Argerich

Indifferent for Nos. 3 and 4.
Fortune favours the musical.

I vote for no. 1,  but only up to tempo, like Yundi, or better yet, Jablonski.

Interesting, I agree. I've heard this played slowly and I don't care for it that way, this piece needs to fly like the wind. What's your idea of a correct MM?

You know, I'll get out my metranome later, but all I know is that EVERYONE, from Ashkenazy to Argerich, plays it way too slowly.

The only two I have heard that play it at a good tempo are Krystof Jablonski and Yundi Li.

Listened to Yundi Li play #1 last night, it's astonishing, and sensitive in the middle section, what a good singing line. This is someone to keep your eyes on....

no. 1 is my favorite. I love the polish medley in the midst of everything else.
