best recording of the chopin sonatas?
on: August 21, 2005, 08:38:38 PM
i have only heard biret's no1, and she does a really good job.
for no 3 there are a sumber of choices, i like argerich and kissin, and langlang sounded really good in a live performance of this(hes recoridng it too for his next cd i think)

but undoubtedly the best no2 ive heard is pogorelich, on video.

absolutely STUNNING performance, the sheer force and power her brings to the loud moments is amazing, but equally amazing are the softer moments, amazing colour and above all extremely emotional.

id like to hear more performances though, any particular recommendations for the 1st and 3rd?

Ashkenazi recorded no.1, as well.

For the 2nd my absolute favorite is Rachmaninov. Kapell is wonderful, too.
For the 3rd both Lipatti and Kapell are my favorites. I never could deside which I like more.
Gilels is wonderful (unlike his early recording of 2nd Sonata) and presents the piece from completely different angle.

yeah, ashkenazy and biret are the only complete sets i know of, its really puzzling that noone else records the complete works.

the 1st sonata is a wonderful and underrated work, very melodically inspired.

yeah kapell pwns, and koji attwood aint half bad either

IMO

Kapell owns #3 :o :D

Haven't heard #1 in years, I think Alexis Weissenberg recorded it; might be worth looking at, it has a slow movement in 5/4. It's Chopin, how bad could it be?

#2, I enjoy recordings by Horowitz, Argerich and yes, Rachmaninov is extraordinary. Rubinstein is always great with Chopin, but haven't heard these recordings in years, I'm pretty sure he recorded both 2 and 3 .

Where can I find Rachmaninov's recording?

Perahia's 2nd and 3rd sonatas are awesome. His second is the best in terms of voicing that I've heard.

Katsaris and Pollini
The masterpiece tell the performer what to do, and not the performer telling the piece what it should be like, or the cocomposer what he ought to have composed.

Where can I find Rachmaninov's recording?

It's in an RCA Box set of his complete recordings ($100 ten years ago) , and is probably available separately... :)

I bought Katsaris' recording of all three sonatas in 1994 and it's served me well over the years; my only quibble is that he omits the repeat in the first movement of the C minor sonata (he takes the repeats in the first movements of the B-flat minor and B minor sonatas).  Although it's probably not what Chopin intended, he takes the tempo of the scherzo from the B minor sonata down a step for the B major section, which I think makes a nice contrast with the E-flat major sections.  He tends to make a specific point of making repeated sections sound different second time through, and though he overdoes it sometimes (he really stabs some of his accents), it's still better than hearing the same thing played the same way twice.

I've heard Rachmaninov's recording of the B-flat minor sonata, and while it's certainly very good (if not technically flawless - but then which pianist is/was?  Even Hamelin isn't perfect :)), some of his interpretations didn't quite sit well with me.  Hard to beat his recordings of his own works, though. :)

Tamas Vasary's recordings of Sonatas 2 and 3 are superb.  I had them on LP years ago.  I may check to see if these are available on CD.

sonata 3: Lipati, Gilels...
hum, basically I am repeating the list by Marik...
