Coolest ending to play!
on: August 22, 2005, 07:33:24 PM
I believe we’ve already discussed some endings of pieces, but I’d like to know which piece for piano solo is very cool to play yourself.

As for me, I loved to play the ending of Debussy’s L’Isle Joyeuse. It’s not an usual ending and there’s a lot of power in it. Plus it’s a lot of fun to play :)

Schuman Carnaval and Beethoven 110 from experience. But I imagine ending something as huge as the Beethoven Op. 106, or the Rachmaninoff 3rd Concerto would allow one to feel that they are the sh$%.

It's not for piano solo, but I find the endings to the 1st and 3rd movements of Bach's Clavier Concerto No.1 in D minor are a lot of fun and very cool for Bach.

For piano solo, however:

Scriabin's Etude in D#-minor Op.8 No.12
Chopin's Sonata No.3 in B minor Op.58 4th mvt.
Chopin's Nocturne Op.48 No.1 in C minor
Beethoven's 'Moonlight' Sonata Op.27 No.2 3rd mvt.

1. Pictures at an Exhibition
 2. Chopin Scherzo #2
 3. Ginastera Sonata #1
 4. Hungarian Rhapsody #15 (my own, I added chords) :D

There are many more,  but those immediately come to mind

Haven't played yet but Ginastera Concerto #1 ;)

The endings to the Bach WTC minor pieces, where the last chord is major.

I think its called "Tierre de picardie"

So enjoyable to just sink into the last chord.

No, it's thierry de piacardie  8)

haha no kidding. In fact it is a "tierce de picardie" , wich is a french expression. A "tierce" is the french word for "third" because you end in the major relative third of the piece. It could be traducted : "Picardie's third"

I thought Horowitz's 1986 concert in Moscow was the best performance of this piece I've ever heard. He played the ending beautifully. It just takes some effort and musicality to make it sound right.

I'm also going to contribute Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody #19 in D minor, and, though it's not long, the end of the first movement of Beethoven's Sonata in F minor, Op.2 No.1.

Chopin: Op. 10 No. 4 etude
Lizst: La Campanella (beginning from the "Animato" section)
Scriabin: Etude Op. 42 no. 5
Beethoven: Moonlight's 3rd

Edit: Though the only one i can play is Moonlight's 3rd, 42/5 and La Campanella are a bit over my league.

All of chopins ballades, especially the 4th.

No one mentioned the Pathetique... right? Maybe I missed something though.

The ending of the first movement is fun. The ending of the third movement is fun too but its kind of easy to botch. The fingering is kind of strange, or at least mine was. Ah well.

fantasia baetica with 47 cadenza  ::)

The Usual Suspects: rach 3rd concerto, Hungarian Rhapsodies 2,6

chopin sonata 3, every prokofiev sonata, Rachmaninoff sonatas, most other hungarian rhapsodies.

anything that has little musical value but extreme fury will generally be a cool, fun, "look at what a good boy I am!" type ending.

One more awesome ending to play..........hmmmmmm...oh what the hell is that piece from when your a kid...."THE WILD RIDER" ...awesome, and it gives children a chance to be furious. Who wrote that? Schuman? Benda? I have no clue.  8)

I'm gonna stab in the dark and say :

La Campanella
Apassonata's last mouvement.
Rach 2-3
Brahms klaverstucke (i think) op119
Prokofiev 3, 1rst mouvement.

Of course I can only play 2 of them.

Not that I can play a lot of these, but:

Bach: English Suite No.4, Prelude; English Suite No.5, Gigue
Chopin: Sonata No.2, first movement; Sonata No.3, fourth movement; Scherzo No.3; Scherzo No.4; Etude Op.10 No.6; Etude Op.25 No.12
Debussy: Suite bergamasque, Passepied; Ballade in F major
Beethoven: Sonata No.7 in D major, first movement; 'Les adieux' sonata, first movement; 'Emperor' concerto, third movement
Dvorak: Humoresque Op.101 No.5 in A minor; Humoresque Op.101 No.8 in B-flat minor (cutting off suddenly and with an unexpected G natural as the penultimate note)
Brahms: Rhapsody Op.79 No.1; Rhapsody Op.79 No.2
Kabalevsky: Sonata No.1, first and third movements; Sonata No.2, third movement; Sonata No.3, first movement
Rachmaninov: Sonata No.2, third movement; Prelude Op.32 No.3 in E major
Prokofiev: Concerto No.3, first and third movements; Sonata No.7, first and third movements
Bartok: Sonata, third movement
Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsody No.4; Hungarian Rhapsody No.6; Hungarian Rhapsody No.15, Horowitz arrangement; 'Wilde jagd'; Prelude and Fugue on B-A-C-H
Alkan: Grande sonate, first and second movements; 'En rhythme molossique'; Symphony for Solo Piano, first and second movements
Shostakovich: Concerto No.2, first and third movements; Preludes Op.34: No.9 in E major, No.20 in C minor; Preludes and Fugues Op.87: No.4 in E minor, No.5 in D major, No.9 in E major, No.16 in B-flat minor, No.18 in F minor, No.20 in C minor, No.21 in B-flat major No.23 in F major

Observation about the Shostakovich Op.87: of the twelve minor key preludes and fugues, seven end on major resolutions - Nos.4, 8, 12, 16, 18, 20, and 24.  The first three end with tierces de picardie, but while the E minor does so triumphantly, the F-sharp minor and G-sharp minor seem to "die quietly but with smiles on their faces".  The next three feature extended yet understated major resolutions - I often think of the conclusion to the B-flat minor fugue (the transition to major in which is one of the most emotionally powerful moments in the entire set) as showing the fugue not only expiring with a smile on its face, but ascending to heaven afterward.  The F minor fugue, despite ending in F major, still manages to end on a vaguely sad note (as does the prelude, which also ends in F major).  The C minor fugue once again ends calmly rather than sadly.  But the final resolution of the D minor fugue into major.... that's the only one I don't like.  It strikes me as loud and overdone (the final D major section is longer than the entire D major fugue) - Shostakovich may have specialised in loud, grotesque pieces intended satirically (for example, every scherzo movement he ever wrote), but this is the one which rings most hollow for me.

I relax at the start of each quarter beat.
Still, I had some issues with it. I posted one of my live performances of it (with the little extra on the ending) on this board once and it got ripped apart, so I won't be doing that again.

I'll second that, and toss in a vote for the ending of Osieaux Tristes. That's probably the most breathtaking slow ending Ravel wrote.

If you are in a "virtuoso" mood, the end of Prokofiev's Toccata will give you goose bumps.  However, in a more dreamy or meditative mood, I like the end of Beethoven's Sonata Op. 90.

20th cent. endings can usually be pretty cool.

My personal favorite is Muczinsky (Sp... :-[) Preludes.

I think it is one and six, they are found in the current Gr. 10 RCM rep book. So cool.
