Mendelssohn Variations

Has anyone heard of the Variations Serieuses? Might they be difficult enough for college auditions? Thoughts?

Mendelssohn's Variations Serieuses are highly demanding and an excellent vehicle for a pianist to display his/her virtuosity.  IMO, they are one of Mendelssohn's finest compositions.  I've seen the Variations Serieuses performed at major piano competitions, and they are worthy of serious consideration [pun intended].

Yes.  I suspect they are difficult, but a way cool piece if you can play it.
So much music, so little time........

They are quite difficult, they cover the "large scale 19th Century composition" required by most music schools for the entrance audition. There are good recordings by de Larrocha and Horowitz, and I think Perhaia.

Well, that's a relief! The Rachmaninoff Corelli would have taken too long, so now I'm content with my decision. Thanks guys. ;)

I hate to say it, but that kid's performance was absolutely horrible. He had tons of missed notes, none of his rubato made any sense, and he blew threw it without any regard for Mendelssohn's style. Perhaia's has so much more maturity, and his tempo actually makes sense. Nonetheless, not too bad for a twelve year old.

He is a very good and smart kid, the problem is nobody explained him how to play it. He needs a good teacher.
