Martha Argerich's hair
on: August 29, 2005, 08:33:30 AM
Hi, i'm really amused by the fact that Martha Argerich plays with her hair down.  I have long hair, but i always tuck it behind my ears because it ends up bothering me.  How does Martha do it??  :o

I'm the same, I have to tie mine back if I'm performing. But when I'm practicing it doesn't make a difference. I suppose I just feel more confident if there isn't the chance, however small, that my hair is suddenly going to block my vision! And mine is neither as long or thick (looking) as hers.
I suppose Argerich just doesn't need to sweat the small stuff like the rest of us do. She knows her hair isn't going to make a difference. But until I'm as good as her (or not ;)) I'll keep tying it back, just in case!

I used to have very long hair (actually quite like Martha's) and I quite liked to let it loose... then no one could see my face whilst performing (I hate this).

I've got long hair too, maybe even longer than Argerich's ;) But if I practice or perform, I always tie it back. I don't know why Argerich doesn't. Maybe she wants to look mysterious or something? ;D

She is an uncomfortable performer. It's always looked to me like she's hiding behind it.

I recently saw her perform and was amazed by the way she handles her hair.  When her hair falls in her eyes, she just brushes it away like it was nothing.  It's a little freaky to see her playing some ridiculously difficult passage while keeping the hair out of her eyes.  It appears quite second nature to me, like a reflex.  I'd think it would be a distraction, but it obviously isn't for her.
