Competition program
on: August 31, 2005, 11:46:26 AM
Has anyone some tips?
Is this a good competition program: (www.bechstein-competition.com)

First round:

Bach               4th Partita , Ouverture
Schubert         Sonata A Major, D959 (first part)
Liszt                Rigoletto Paraphrase
Rachmaninoff  Preludes op. 32 no. 5 & op. 23 no. 7

Second round:

Beethoven      Sonata in E flat major, op. 31
Chopin            2nd Scherzo
Debussy          Suite Pour le Piano
Prokofiev         3rd Sonata

Third round:
Mozart 15th Piano concerto

Finals
Chopin 2nd piano concerto

Maybe Schubert in the first is not such a good idea..?

Thanks!

Sharon

Hi Sharon.  I like your program.  :)  I'm especially happy to see the 23/7 (one of my favorites!) and the Chopin #2 on there!  Just out of curiosity, what's the reason for not doing the entire Schubert?

If you have some recordings, please post them in our "Audition Room" section of the forum - - - we'd love to hear you!  Good luck!

Nice to hear that!

That I won't play the entire Schubert Sonata, is because of the time I have. In the first round I only must play 45 minutes, and not longer. So, that's why.. I don't know something else. otherwise it's maybe not such a nice program, isn't it?
I'm not allowed to play something in the first round what I will play in the second round.

When I'm finished with the pieces then I maybe post them in the Audition Room!

Your jury for the Bechstein is very interesting - - - I'm surprised to see Gerstein on it!  He seems so young to be doing jury duty already!

I noticed on the competition website that they claim to be focused on originality as an important part of the competition... not just in sound/interpretation but also on program/repertoire.  For this reason (not because I don't like your program) I might suggest including a lesser-known work - possibly replacing either the Debussy suite, Chopin scherzo or the Rachmaninoff preludes.

Also the website is a bit unclear.  The third round is an open rehearsal, but I don't know if you need a second concerto for that or if you will be rehearsing the Chopin concerto in preparation for the fourth round.  By recommending a Partita as a an example of a piece from the Klavierubung of Bach, they make it sound like you need a whole partita - I don't know if the overture is enough.  In this case you may have to drop one of the other pieces from that round.

Good luck!

Always play as though a master listened.

I like the Debussy Preludes.. Maybe Voiles and Feux d'Artifice? Could I play that instead of the Debussy Suite? Or do you have another suggestion?
Thanks!
