Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges. Nice interview!

I didn't know you were into good English shoes. I haven't gotten much past Allen-Edmonds. Do you have a last at John Lobb's or any of the other nice shoemakers? I wonder if they make special shoes for pianists (to facilitate pedaling, for example). Ah, the shoe, a much neglected part of the playing apparatus ;D

Lobb's are gorgeous, but if I had the bucks, I'd get bespoke Edward Green or Cleverly (love the chisel-toe).  The pedaling question is actually one I've posed to several cobblers, with varying degrees of amusement (their reaction).
