Getting Started Recording
on: September 01, 2005, 04:17:44 AM
I didn't want to post this on the Recordings board, becasue.....it's not a recording. But, I'm interested in starting to record my playing, both for personal enjoyment and for posting here. Can some helpful person get me started here? I.E., what microphones to use, where to buy them, what programs to use, etc. etc. I can figure out how to post them, it's just everything else that's bothering me right now....
For instance, I started a post about improvs, and people told me to record them and lsiten to them....I thought, that sounds great! But, I have no tools for it....
I could just go out and buy something, but I want it to be good quality, but not too expensive, etc. etc....which brings up prices. How much would a standard "Recording Tool Set" cost?
Lots of questions

Here are two of my previous posts regarding recording equipment. The first one I posted when I was in the process of choosing a mic. The second is a description of how I placed the mics for a recording.

As for programs, look at Audacity. It's an open source wave editior you can download and use for free.

If you have a digital piano, I would buy an iMic. It is ia direct line device, which means no outside noise at all --- no recording studio necessary! And it runs into any USB port.
When I bought my iMic, it came with some "sample" recording programs. One of them was Adobe Audition. There are many functions with this program, and in the sample only one could be used at a time -- but that's no problem if you only want to record. The usage turned out to be unlimited, even though it supposedly was only a 5-hr trial.
Unfortunately, this runs about $300. I am sure there are cheaper recording programs around, but I haven't looked into it much. As quantam said, there are many you can download for free.
Microphones are trickier. You would want a pretty high-quality mic, not just any old tiny plastic thing that goes on computers. Check out quantam's links. (I'm so lazy.)
Or, you might try looking for some local, independent recording studios. I know there is one right down the street from me --- I've never gone there, so I don't know if they do piano recordings. But it's worth a look. Don't know how much they charge, either.
P.S. -- why aren't you "chopinterry"?

My full name is Terrence James O'Donovan. I go by Terry. But on the internet, I use my semi-sorta initials: TO'D: tod.
Thanks for the help.
