I'll introduce myself as well. My name is Brian and I live in San Antonio.
By day, I am a project manager for a large consulting firm. By evening, I am a full time father, husband, and piano player after the kiddo konks out to go to sleep. My son is two year old this November, and my wife is in her second to last semester of her Nurse Practitioners Maters Degree in Mental Health, so the full time father role is in the forefront more often than not.

When I was 5 years old I began taking piano lessons and this continued until age 14. The alst year and a half of my lessons, I was discouraged from playing mainly due to an instructor that really had no business teaching and didn't offer a lot of feedback. One of those, go into her house, play while she is sitting back just listening, her two kids were running through the house. It was an inconsistent lesson and never a fully attentive instructor. As such, I stopped playing.

Recently, my father (whom himself teaches Music at a private school and has been a choir director for 35 years) informed me that his chruch was expanding and wanted to know if I wanted the old family upright that he and my mother donated to the church since the parish was to get rid of it.

I brought it to my house, cleaned it up, had it professionally tuned (suprisingly to a beautiful A-440) and have been playing on it for the last two months. Thus, the piano bug bit me once again from where I was before.

I recently began taking lessons from a former professor of piano from a university here and have loved it since.

My current level is intermediate though I am reviewing a lot of my older material to bring myself up to speed on theory, re-acquaint myself with scales, appreggios, and the like. The piano I practice on is a Jennsen Upright piano built in 1972 that my parents bought for $3000 back in the day (Waaaaaaaaay back in the day). As I have already explained to my wife, I have decided to keep my Land Rover after it is paid off in 2 years and am actively searching for my grand piano. While not opposed to any brands and am still developing my "tone", I am in love with the older (1900-1910) Bosendorfer 210's (7' bosies) (yes, I'm fully aware of the price tag involved with them as well). I have also been looking at the more recent Steinway B's.

Thanks!
Brian.

Wise decision, as grand pianos are not very good on the motorway and they don't have much space for the shopping.

Like you, I had bad teachers when i was young that destroyed my interest. Did not meet a good teacher until i was 37, but learned more from him than all of the other idiots added together.

Welcome and enjoy.

Not sure, but driving under the influence of Schumann should be punished by law.

And no doubt would be so if you were the lawmaker concerned. That said, what might your opinion be of the appropriate legal status of driving under the influence of Carter?

Would driving under the influence of Carter be as safe as roofing under the influence of Thatcher?
On that point, would a stair build by Ali be safer then one build by anyone else?

The answer to your first question is almost certainly that, whatever the safety aspect thereof, it would at least be preferable to the roofing alternative - but that to your second is one that I am especially unqualified to provide, so it will accordingly have to be up to anyone else who might care to oblige in my stead (although I should perhaps warn in advance that, should any such person essaying so to oblige happen to mention l'Escalier du Diable in this context, they might just happen to come in for a blast of wrath that they possibly did not anticipate!...)

Best,

In an entirely different context, I think "l'Escalier du Diable" would sound really fine on prepared piano, a la Cage's "Sonatas & Interludes" (specifically) this time of year, if it wasn't harrowing enough played unprepared (the only way I could possibly play it  ;))!

Wow...it's amazing that this thread is still open, since the first post was in...2002, I think! I joined this forum a few weeks ago, but had only been lurking and reading through some posts.

I used to play piano but had to stop because other commitments and responsibilities got in the way (having to move around a lot didn't help either!). Now I want to get back to playing and...I must say, I am back to being addicted!

It's good to be here. Hope to learn more tips and strategies on playing.

I live in Southern Indiana and am retired if the money holds out.  I took lessons from Nikki Jelson in Houston 58-64, then the band director said I should focus on the bassoon the school lent me, so I did and made Tex All-State band in '68.  Had no instrument from 69-82 when I bought a Sohmer console piano while pulled back into the Army.  (I graduated just too late for VietNam).  Found Beethoven Sonata's complete,Pictures at an Exhibition, and JS Bach organ book 1 at music store in Manhattan KS, worked on those for years, organ practice on piano with no pedal part.  Got Moonlight 3rd movement up to 1/3 of R. Serkin's speed.  Moved to Louisville, got involved in a church, played for junior choir for 5 years, took them from Stamps-Baxter basics to some more advanced stuff.  Arranged a Christmas cantata backup on electronic keyboard before they were selling CD's with and without singer tracks.  Minister rotated away, got bored, went to another church with a better minister but a boring music program. Sang in choir for 12 years, nice people but tedious and bland.  Work got demanding, didn't play much.  Broke a string tuning the Sohmer in 1999, didn't play for years, the tuner had complained about my cat the last time I let him in.  Quit my job in 08, found a 1941 Steinway console on the internet, bought it, tuned it, love it. It has a spliced wire, gives me ideas for the Sohmer.  I haven't lost much coordination pounded into my brain stem by practice, but having to rebuild forearm strength.  Bought a Hammond organ 2 weeks ago for pedal organ pieces.  Having a ball practicing.

I haven't been to every thread on this board and just discovered this thread because of a recent posting that showed in "unread posts." Please excuse the belated introduction.

My login name says it all: Oxy60 = Occidental College class of 1960, B.A. Liberal Arts music major. Fraternity: Phi Mu Alpha

My reason for joining this site was to get some classical piano sheet music. I may live in an area of 20+ million people that of it were a country could be the fifth largest economy in the world but music stores with classical piano sheet music are very scarce and may not have the exact piece I want.

I started on Clarinet at age 4 then piano at 6, then string bass at 13, organ at 15 and finally tuba at 16. My first church job was at 17 which didn't help my piano touch at all. My senior recital was as an instrumental conductor.

This is really a wonderful site with very helpful posts and recordings.

Hello to everyone!

I'm Tom, a 28yr old amateur pianist from Belgium. I stumbled upon this forum mainly because I was searching for more information about some upright pianos, as I'm in the middle of purchasing a new piano.

I'll also take my time to explore the rest of the site of course. I'm sure I'll find much to my liking!

BR,

Tom

hi to everyone!

here is mine..

I started playing piano when I was 6yrsold way back year 19's as my father introduced that music to me..
also, at that age, he enrolled me in a piano class near our place. Since then, it became a lesson, next to hobby, next to some kind a obsession to this kind of music.
an incident happened, it suddenly ruined up my piano course.
it's been almost 10 years since i stopped (not quitting) playing the piano, another event that ruined my career in this field, when my only piano (organ) started to experienced its keys malfunctioning, how depressing it was since i cannot afford to replace a new one..

through these years, memoirs started to play again in my mind, i wanted to play and continue again what i've started before, as what my father wants for me, realizing that if there is a will in doing something, there will always a way.

i want to start again, explore my world, i want to meet individuals who have same interests as mine, especially in playing the piano.

starting is learning again.

who ever caught the attention of my post..
message me out..

(i like the minuet g k 1 of Mozart, hehehe.. its nice and the sonata of Beethoven.. and a lot more)

I'm a middle-aged amateur who learned to play piano in early childhood.  I've had a number of lengthy lapses from music-making since then, but early retirement has afforded me the opportunity to practice with renewed energy and enthusiasm.  I play for my own enjoyment and I prefer to challenge myself.

I like listening to a wide range of music and exploring unfamiliar music, too, but I'm most interested in learning and playing Romantic-era classical.  My first love is Chopin, and my other favorite composers include Schumann and Brahms.  Recent projects have included Chopin's Allegro de Concert and Schumann's Toccata, and for the past couple of months I've been working on the solo version of Fauré's Ballade Op. 19.

I've known of this site for quite a while but never followed it closely because its appearance (i.e., light text on a dark background) was just too uncomfortable to read.  I wonder if others have been deterred from joining and participating for that reason as well.  I've gotten around it with an add-on for the Firefox browser called "NoSquint," which allows zoom levels and colors to be changed for individual sites or globally.

I look forward to contributing here.

Hello, I've been a member of this forum for quite some time now, I just haven't ever made time to get on it  :P  I'm a senior in high school and I've been playing the piano since I was ten, my parents made me start lessons and now I would never quit!

I definitely haven't had have as much time as I would like to devote to music but it will always be a huge part of me!  :)

Hello all.

I just stumbled upon this forum a few days ago, and I must say I am rather excited about this place.  I've always wanted to find a medium in which to discuss my love for Classical and piano music and I seem to have found it here.

A little bit about myself; I am a student at a private college in Illinois; I've taken piano lessons since I was 6 and continue to do so today.  I recently started taking composition lessons at my school, and I am looking forward to having my first compositions performed at the Composer's Recital this spring.

My favorite composer is Scriabin, particularly the later works (although his earlier music is some of the best Romantic music I've yet heard); a very close second is Kaikhosru Sorabji; following that are (in no particular order) Busoni, Ravel, Debussy, Liszt, Mahler, Messiaen, Feinberg, and Rachmaninov.

I look forward to becoming a part of this community.

Well I joined this forum exactly half a year ago!!! :) on september 21st 2009! :) :)  :D So it would be kinda late to introduce myself i think :) But I would really like to introduce my piano!!! :) :) :)
My piano is really great!!!!! :) I got it on february 1st (so that's kinda long time ago too :) ) I had been waiting for my piano since Christmas :) and I was sooooo happy when I finally got it!! And I still am of course!! :) :) :) And I was standing outside and waiting for my piano while two guys were bringing it up the stairs. And it was freezing outside and my mum wanted me to go inside (or at least to go put on something warm) but I couldn't cause i was sooo nervous!  :) And that thing with which they were bringing the piano up the stairs was making a funny sound and my kitty got scared and hid somewhere in my room :) And then the piano fitted exactly right through the door and into my room and I even helped them just a little :) and it was sooo cool!  8) And one guy was really cool and nice (the other one was nice too but he was talking to my mum all the time) and (that first guy) he was playing with my cat and my dog :) and talking to me :) and he said I should play something. And i didn't want to and I said I can't play very well yet cause I only just started learning. And he said that all the 5year olds play something right away and im a big girl and I don't want to. And I still didn't want to and they were alomst leaving already and he said again I should play something and I was like i don't know..... and he said come on play something it doesn't matter what I can't play anything either. And then I said ok :) and I just put my hands on the piano and he said, well why did you say you can't play you put your hands on the piano exactly right! :) :) he was really funny  :) :) and then I played Old German Dance and he was like well you see you can play why did you say you couldn't play??? :) :)
Well now my piano is still not exactly where it's supposed to be we have to move it a bit and then it also needs to be tuned....
so a few pictures of my piano :) (and my kitty and dogy :) :) ) oh and my doggy has a birthday today!!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! :)  :D  :)

Oh and my piano is not new it says that it's high quality used piano. And my piano is soooo coool!  8)  :)

(oh and just in case anyone would like to hear how it sounds too here are some very easy pieces that i've played....  :-\ but I really think it would be much better to just wait until my piano gets tuned and until I learn to play better.... I've played three very short pieces that I thought would be cool for welcoming my piano :) Trumpets by Martin Kutnowski, Boogie by Layos Papp and Minuet by Daniel Gottlob Turk :

And I've also played : A Song by Alexander Fyodorovich Gedike:

and: Old German Dance by Michael Praetorious :

and: Minuet by James Hook :

but my piano is not tuned yet and I can't play very well yet and the sound isn't so very great either :) so better not)
But my piano is really great!!!!!!!!!!! :)  :D  8)  :)

Congratulations on getting your piano. Your are starting off on the correct path. You have good meter, good technique and a good sense of phrasing.

Also your English is better than someone who just watches English programs on TV.

There is a theory that one will have better success with a second language they learn before age twelve. At a MUCH later age I not only cannot pronounce Dutch and German diphthongs, I don't even hear them correctly. However the Spanish I learned when I was ten is still with me.

Keep up the good work!

Thank you very very very much!!! :) :)  :)
Well my cat isn't so very interested in fish :) More in birds and especialy in some insects flying around :) But she does put her paw in the water a lot of times but I don't think it's because of the fish but because she is really interested in water! She really likes to play with water :) she's a funny cat :)
Thank you! :)

I am Carl from Sweden. I will be 20 years old in April 8. I am an amateur pianist. I have played publically before but nowadays I play only at home. I play pieces that I love and often at a pretty poor standard since I have no teacher. I have great technique. I have managed to play some really difficult pieces like Chopin's polonaise op.53, rhapsody in blue by Gershwin, Waldstein sonata (3rd movement) and Moonlight sonata (3rd movement), Prelude in C# minor by Rachmaninoff and many more. I am here in hope to learn a lot about piano playing and hopefully get some tips and ideas on how to improve both technically and emotionally. And hopefully I will get to know some nice people too.

As a person I am nice, honest, positive and intelligent. I am serious about my piano playing but otherwise I am silly most of the time and love to joke and have fun. That's me :) :) :)

Generally, I feel a bit suspicous about ppl saying they are honest, nice and intelligent... But since you're from sweden, I think I belive you ;P

Anyhow!
I'm also from sweden. 21 yo in june. I've been playing the piano since the age of 14.
In august, I'll begin studying in either Aarhus Conservatory in Denmark, or Oslo Music academy in Norway.
I see myself as a more musical than technical pianist. But that is about to change! My first goal is to play the full symphonic etudes on a festival in May. When that festival is over, I'll start my next project: The complete Liszt/paganini-etudes :D

I could have said that I am evil, dumb and a liar also but that would have sounded negative and would not be the truth either. Hehe :)

Those etudes are difficult. Best of luck!

hiya, everyone, nice to meet you all!!
I'm a newbie here. as my user name has shown, you can call me phio-chan or phio. I'm from Indonesia, and I love music, including classical ones. I don't really have piano at home, I only have a keyboard which is as long as piano, hehe~
and I don't have any piano courses, I learn how to play piano on my own. that's why I'm not doing very well on it, but I'm trying my best to keep on learning. ^^;;

Brilliant! I recently discovered pianostreet and am still completely amazed at how easy it is now to find so much music in one place 8)
My name is Sandra, I'm 19 years old and live in Stockholm in Sweden. I'm studying at the University of Stockholm to become a human rights barrister but I'm a bit undecided maybe I'll change my major in the future...I've played the piano since I was six years old and the guitar for two years, I wish I could say that I was very good at any of them but my technique is just awful at times although I love to play and listen to all sorts of music - from Chopin to Miles Davis and The Clash. Currently I'm trying to learn Etude Op. 76 no. 2 by Jean Sibelius and Valse Sentimentale by Tchaikovsky and would be most grateful for any tips and ideas  :) I also tried to learn a song by Oasis on the guitar but they have a lot of "barre(?)"-chords and as much as I practice I just can't seem to get them right - does anyone have a clue how to play them or how to practice in order to learn them?

Hello everyone,

I am Seth. I am 18, and I am a senior in high school, however, not for long. I am planning on attending the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) in the Fall; if all the outrageous expenses get worked out, I'll have the honor of working with Aurthur Greene.

A little bit [more] about me: I've been playing just over 5 years (I started when I was 13, in middle school). Although I haven't had much time playing the piano, I've worked extremely hard and have immersed myself in music. My forte is classical piano, although I am able to play jazz and improvise as well. My other musical interests including conducting, teaching, composing (sparingly), trombone and the drum set. I've been taught by two teachers; my first teacher was a local, retired, teacher who has become a great friend. My second, and current, teacher is a Steinway artist, and how we met was quite remarkable (however, I won't just come out and explain the LONG story).

I've studied in Europe twice at a summer "camp" in which I raised the funds (benefit recitals) myself to attend. This GREATLY developed my knowledge and love of music, as well as getting the chance to perform in concerts, masters classes and in chamber trios.

The reason I joined PianoStreet is quite simple. I was apart of another music forums for nearly 5 years, but I definitely overstayed my need to be there, and I wasn't getting much out of it. Stumbling across this website, I see that I am able to lend my advice as well as get some extra pointers and training on the side.

I don't quite know where I'll end up in music, but I know I WILL end up somewhere in music.

My latest accomplishment was my soloist symphony debut, which was earlier today actually!

Here is a video from this past summer of me playing Debussy:

I hope I am able to being something to the table and become friends with many of you!

I, too, feel you will be working with music some day.  You have enormous talent.  For someone who has only been at it for 5 years, you've got great potential.  And it's good that your musical interests are so varied.  In fact, I would venture to say that this has something to do with your gift.  Keep up the improvisation and jazz.  It can be an integral part of your classical training as well.  BRAVO!
