This is the first post from a new guy. I've been enjoying browsing the site, and I'm glad there's a forum of this sort - really happy, actually.
 
The name's David. The screen name, Furtwängler, I chose after the great German conductor who, musically, is an ideal. (Now I'll go on misrepresenting him for my lack of creativity in choosing a screen name that's not somebody else's name...)

Ah...well. I'm 25, have been working as an accompanist for a small university, and have had the good fortune of giving a solo performance every so often. I love music  past a healthy point, the amount of recordings consumed being obsessive (Who needs 70 Mahler 6th's?!)

Anyway, it's nice to have a sight like this available. I'm really going to enjoy it.

Hello Everyone!

I just joined last night and am still finding my way around the forum. From what I've seen so far, this place is very helpful to students and teachers alike, as well as performers. (I consider myself both a teacher and a performer) 

I was blessed with musical parents who encouraged, supported and prodded when necessary. The neighbor on one side of us was a pianist and choir director at one church, while the neighbor on the other side of us was organist at another church, so I was quite literally surrounded with music from an early age. Some of my earliest memories, in fact, were of playing in a playpen behind the piano while my mother rehearsed with a choir.

It was no surprise, then, that I began playing at age three, started formal lessons around age seven, and was accompnying church services at age eleven. By high school I was directing one choir and accompanying another.

Currently, I have about thirty private students ranging from preschool through adult. I also serve as pianist and music director at my church. Several local schools, as well as private voice teachers call on me to accompany their students for competitions and recitals.

Lest you think I have no life outside of music, I have the strange hobby of being obsessed with attending NFL games, and I have the very enjoyable, but  completely useless skill of playing in three different fantasy football leagues. So if I make random comments about quarterbacks, depth charts and divisional standing, please be patient.

By the way...pertaining to the performance anxiety penguinlover...this may sound crazy, but if you eat a banana before performing (or even lessons...I used to get nervous even in my lessons) it really helps with the nerves and shaky hands. Something about potassium being a muscle relaxer or some such.

I am obviously new to the forum, but I read and listen to lots of postings since about a year.

As my name suggests, I work a lot with kids: both my own (4) and those of others, but not as a nanny.

My musical career is not impressive, but longstanding: I started music lessons when I was six years old, played the recorder for years. I desperately wanted to play the piano, but my parents told me there was no room in the house. So I continued to play the recorder, letting them know that my second choice was a flute. At age 18, I got my flute and started lessons. I got lessons all through highschool and college, but my love still went out to the piano. At age 29 or so, I finally got the courage to buy myself an upright piano. I took it with me to my studio in the little town where I followed my second study. I got lessons from a funny guy who basically worked according to the book of Chang, although I did not know at that time.

After two years I moved back to the city where I was born, took the piano with me. Still got lessons, but started a job and had less time to practice. Practice completely stopped after my first son was born. Then I moved to the States. I live here for ten years now and since a few months started to take lessons again with my oldest son's teacher. She is a really great teacher and a good pianist herself. And I do make some progress! I am still a very intermediate student, though, since I do not have a lot of time available for practice.

Other musical experience:
I sing in a church choir and sometimes with a quartet. One of my other kids plays violin, Suzuki method, so I join him and learn how to play as well (still in book 1, he takes it easy). As a teenager I used to play around on an accordion, but since the keys are slightly smaller than a piano's I don't dare to do that at the moment (ha, as if I would have the time for that!).

As you can guess, I may be a little old for this forum, but I do enjoy the posts about the technical approaches and I love to listen to all the performances. It does give me ideas about what to play and how to play it.

Well, that's about it, time for some lessons!

Welcome Supernanny!  You are not too old for the forum, and not nearly as old as some of us here.  While there are many teenagers, there are many "seasoned, mature" people too.  (I won't say we're old!)  Anyway, I can identify with you.  After children enter your life, practice time is at a premium.  It does get better when the go off to college!  That's where I find myself now.  I can actually sit down at the piano and play for an uninterrupted hour!  With no little fingers adding to the music on the top notes!  I do miss th at time when they were small though. 

Oh well, there I go rambling.   Again, welcome!
