yeah this used 2 happen 2 me a lot 2. one problem could b that your hands are too tense. try keeping your wrists as loose and relaxed as possible. this helped me tremendously and also improved my playing; however i just started practicing like this recently when i changed piano teachers so any other advice from experts would help me out 2

would the fact that my piano has a really heavy action contribute to it?

i really don't know if the heavy action is affecting your wrists at all. i know that i personally got more tired playing on my old light action piano than on my new heavier action piano; but i have heard that the action on some pianos can b too heavy for comfort, so again someone with more experiance could probably better answer your question.

You can avoid fatigue if you play with the whole arm in a relaxed way, where none of your body is tense,

Use natural weight and gravity instead of forcing your hands onto the keyboard, and make sure there is no place along the arm that is tense (because this would restrict the natural flow),

Ed is right. For achieving the relaxed feeling of playing try this: play slowly STANDING UP. This way YOU HAVE TO use the whole arm.Try to remember the feeling when you sit down. If you can't feel the palm of the hand and the armpit while you're playing, you're not relaxed. Try also this:let the hand at the side, hanging like a dead weight. In the same state of relaxing put the hand on the keyboard and play. You have to accustom yourself to determine the tensions in your body and eliminate them.

I used to get wrist fatigue and I learned that if I did wrist exercises it helped. I used to be in martial arts and the type of martial art I participated in involved a lot of grabbing your opponents wrists. So part of the basic exercises before class would be to exercise the wrist. Also, search the internet for wrist exercises. It might be the thing you need.

Daily icing and wrist exercises works wonders. It might be a case of tendonitis. If it gets worse and swells then defenitely see your doc.
