Chat room alternative - please read!
on: August 04, 2003, 07:22:01 PM
To all,
As well as many others I think a chat room would be a great addition to this site - however, it is not within my control to put one up. Instead, if we have MSN messenger users here (this seems to be the most common instant messaging service) I suggest anyone who wants to chat with other members leaves their hotmail address in this forum.
Mine is eddie92099_y2k@hotmail.com feel free to add me, hope this works!

Actually, I think that a better alternative would be to have an IRC channel, say with BeyondIRC Servers. To connect, you can implement an IRC Java applet right into the website. That would be most ecconomical, so if you wanted to chat, just click the "Chat" button on the top, and you'd be in a chat room integrated into the layout of this site. Or, you can use mIRC, an IRC client.
It is advisable not to be with MSN, they would control too much, and to find the chat room is too much pain. Having one integrated right into the site is the best solution. And with IRC, you can easily register usernames and channels (channels = chat rooms).

I agree xenon, an integrated chat room would be great, but it's not up to me to put one up! (hint hint)

hmm... You can set one up, get the site to be hosted by a third-party server, and put a link somewhere.

Don't have any fear, it's not complicated at all.
