how to get a "background" job
on: September 12, 2005, 01:36:54 AM
I know there's fancy restaurants and hotels or even the few remaining honky-tonk bars that have pianos being played as background music in the lobby or while people are eating.  But how to get a stint like this?  Anybody work these?  I have a large enough jazz/rag repetoire to qualify, I think, but how to get started?

Ask them.  Play for them for free.

They probably won't just fire their current player and hire you.  You would be a sub and work in from there.

Or know someone who can get you in.  Someone in that "circle" who says you are good, responsible, and can handle the gig will get you in.

There are musician unions and services that supply musicians for gigs.  Find one of those maybe.
