Piano Rental Cost
on: September 15, 2005, 04:01:11 PM
So my store wants to rent a piano so we (and by we i mean me) can play live music in the store. I went to check out prices, and it was like $1200 CDN for two months. Does that seem reasonable? The salesperson said we were basically only paying for the delivery and tuning.
Any thoughts?

Yeah, that's Canadian dollars. Hopefully the store will be willing to drop that amount on a piano... :(

Piano movers (in Toronto) charge about $250, I believe (certainly under $400) each way; tuning is about $90...even if you got the piano tuned monthly for the first few months, $1200 obviously is way more than the moving/tuning costs.  If it's $1200 every two months (i.e. not 1200 for the first two, and then something less afterwards), that's $7200/year, and you might as well buy a new piano. Have you contacted other piano stores?

I bet it's a lot to do with short term v long term hire - the latter being a way of trying to get you to buy it at MRRP down the line :)

Depends what the shortest term is - but you might find 3 months is cheaper.

You can always deal with them, particularly with rentals.  Don't buy into their first offer. :)
