worst by the best!

What are some of the 'lesser' works by the greats? To try to keep it from going into arguement - example - comparing Chopin's op. 46 (I think), the allegro de concert to his 3rd sonata (one's a very good work, one isn't - I would think most people would agree with that)

I really hope the 3rd sonata is the good one... otherwise I might need to hunt you down.  ::)  :)

Beethoven wrote some wacky piece that included cannons in the instrumentation.  It never caught on.  Don't remember the opus though.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

How about Ravel's 1913 "Prelude" ?

He wrote it as a recital piece for a young lady who was going up for her exams in performance.

It is almost certainly the easiest piano piece of Ravel's.

It is quite nice, really.

while i love this question, t is quite obvious that one could come up with an answer to almost any composer...for example, liszt wrote several pieces that were drafted, second drafted, performed, but never caught on; chopin was the king of rewriting, and brahms had mroe failures than one cna mention in a single page. What I like most about these failures are that they accentuate the genius behind the brilliant works. I know of no one who has churned out pure mechanical technical genius  his entire life, but by comparison, even the lesser works only make the greatest look greater...there is no wrong answer here. But I am confused...do you mean lesser works that are famous, or lesser OBSCURE works, that are obscure for the reason that they shy in comparison to the genius ones? Because there is an explicit difference between the two.

good point - I pretty much meant like my example - works that aren't played (much) because they are inferior to much better pieces written by the composer. So I guess the lesser obsure works.

and yes please, an answer to any composer would be great - just to show that the greats are human after all :D

I think you might disagree with me but Chopins Etude op10No2 is a little boring.
