well, i think it depends on (if you choose) how long they've been married.

1 paper or plastics (hahah - a plastic spoon in a paper bag (with 2 chocolate puddings)
2 calico ? or cotton (proably tablecloth/napkins)
3 leather ?  yes.  really hot
4 silk
5 wood
6 iron ?  cast iron skillet?
7 copper or wool (matching sweaters)
8 electrical appliances (finally, the four slice toaster)
9 pottery
10 tin or aluminum
11 steel
12 linen (table, bed)
13 lace
14 ivory
15 crystal or glass
20 china
25 silver
30 pearls
35 coral/jade
40 ruby
45 sapphire
50 gold
60 diamond

that's what emily post says anyway!

my parents just celebrated 41 years and going with the ruby theme for four more years  bought a set of earrings this year to match the necklace last year.  what i find really hard is to think of stuff my dad would like.  sometimes, i just say, let mom wear it and you enjoy it.  but, i need advice on something to surprise him with.  of course, he likes tools, but that  somehow doesn't seem like an anniversary present.  maybe a tool belt to wear in the bedroom?

maybe something thoughtful like a bag of ganj.  You can say its for the whole family, and have a nice fridaynight at home with the parents.

Don't get your mom anything, and say the same as always?

that's cute, and you relieved me from the pressure of being the biggest tease to stevie.  apologizes.  i was thinking i went overboard, but i mean it's kinda true that men are harder to know what to get.  and, usually whatever i get is more for my mom.  my dad is actually my step-dad (not that it matters) but tho he was strict, he was also very good dad.  now, whenever things are tough in my life, i thank him for showing me how to get through it.  he never quit and always had a funny streak.  anyway, i feel kinda badly because maybe i haven't tried hard enough over the years to show appreciation.  am thinking of getting him something.

he's not really into clothes (which i get shirt and/or tie for father's day) or cologne.  he's more, like into technology.  he'd probably like it if i actually went into fry's electronics, or one of those computer stores.  the problem is, i can't figure out what he'd find appealing.  maybe i'll just watch my husband in one of those stores.  things that he likes, he sort of hangs around in the aisle and comes back to, and hangs around some more (reading product details).  my husband thinks that those satellite guided car mapping systems (that speak to you about where you are located and how to get where you want to go).  but, in thinking about that one - my dad might get offended.  he always wants people to think he knows where to go by himself and doesn't need help.  anchorage only has two main highways, too.  north and south.  east would be the mountains and west is the cook inlet.

Technology sounds like a winner. The only caveat I'd say is, if he's the type that studies and cares what make / model etc of whatever he buys. For example, some people just want a "digital camera" and couldn't care less or probably tell you what make they have others would ideally want a specific camera that they've spent time finding out about, so you might need to find out _exactly_ what he wants.

[Some would say, the 2 groups I just described are called "women" and "men" :) but not always....]

yes.  i think this is what has scared me from trying to purchase for him.  i suppose if i left the receipt (gift receipt) in the box, he could return it if he didn't like it.
