"Sphere" : Composition by Mayla Fox
on: September 18, 2005, 06:52:48 PM
Hi, this is a fughetta I composed about 4 or 5 years ago.  It's title comes from two different things.  Firstly, it is (of course) an expression of my thoughts, feelings and perceptions of the universe as a whole, which to me has a spherical quality (I do not know how to explain that).  Secondly, the overall form is "round" as it ends the way it begins.

I originally wanted to compose it for a string trio, but it is run through a computer program, and the sounds are various synthesized selections.  The quality is not stunning, but I can't help myself from posting it.  Thanks for listening  :)

ps- at the time I turned this into an mp3, I did not know how to trim the recording, so the file is bigger than the piece actually is.  Basically, when it sounds done,  it is, even though the total time is longer than it.

I must admit that had I not read your description I would not have visualised a compact manifold in the form of a sphere ! Then again I am inclined to listen very hard at, and be excited by, the details in music while remaining blissfully unaware of any overall conception.

I think your geometric form idea has much potential and appeal, at least in the intellectual sense, and that it is worthy of your creating much larger, more complex works in the same idiom, even if just by way of experiment. It brings back memories for me because almost forty years ago I used to write little contrapuntal pieces using geometric and mosaic forms. Your description of a sphere brought the whole thing back. I had completely forgotten about those; I suppose they're lying around the floor somewhere.

Thank you very much for this feedback, Ted.  Actually, your mentioning writing larger works in a similar idiom gave me the realization that I think I could indeed do that.  I have been wanting to write much larger works for awhile now, and have never known where to begin.  But, your suggestion makes perfect sense to me.

he he... scary... thanks, stevie  :)

I'm so happy you found it interesting  :).  Thank you for responding.

Very cool -- I could imagine leaning back in a planetarium and hearing it while looking at the stars...(don't see the real stars much where I live :P)

Thanks for your responses  :)  Yeah, I suppose I do enjoy music that haunts... I am not sure why, but I guess that's okay.

abell, I definitely like the idea of being in the planetarium.  I absolutely love it when I am somewhere I can truly see the night sky... imo, the night sky is one of the greatest natural wonders on Earth  ;) ;D ... he he.

But yes, actually, this is me looking out from the stars.  Thanks for your feedback.
