Leslie Howard
on: August 07, 2003, 06:50:52 AM
Has anyone here seen Leslie Howard play? I went to a concert of his last night and he was awesome. He gets such power out of the instrument (especially in the way he uses low bass notes), but his sound is never harsh, it's always sincere and beautiful. In soft passages, his playing is really delicate, but at the same time really emotionally intense. And talk about an 'orchestral' sound! His playing comes closer to that description than anyone i've heard before, especially when he plays Lizst (his specialty).

I have heard very little of his playing but of course he is well known for recording the complete piano works of Liszt - does he play anything else?! (and if so, how did he find time to learn it?)

i think he recorded most of percy grainger's piano music.
he must have a great memory, or be a quick learner, or just be really hard working :D

Leslie howard has the most insane keyboard technique I have ever seen. He plays the fugue of the Hammerklavier at beethovens metronome mark! He is a phenomenal technician, and one of the most intelligent musicians I know. He knows absolutely everything, plays absolutey everything, and is an absolutely first class pianist and musician.

I went to his website to find out any future concert dates, and there werne't any...or i'm very inept at website management.  I was wondering if anyone knew if he'd be coming to Australia anytime soon?  I'd love to see him perform.

(To be specific, i'm in Western Australia, nearby to Perth.)
What it all comes down to is that one does not play the piano with one’s fingers; one plays the piano with one’s mind.-  Glenn Gould

Yes I have seen him play. The power! To me, he is without question the pianist who can create the largest amount of sound with the minimal looking effort...Sometimes it looks like he is barely moving yet the sound created is enormous. He can make the hardest Liszt passages look easy.

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
