Does Rachmaninoff Touch Your Heart?
Today, with smartwatches and everyday electronics, it is increasingly common to measure training results, heart rate, calorie consumption, and overall health. But monitoring heart rate of pianists and audience can reveal interesting insights on several other aspects within the musical field. Read more >>

Moon12's Video Recordings
on: September 27, 2005, 10:47:58 PM
I am a newbie pianist, playing for about 18 months now - so I thought I'd do some video recordings as I enjoy making them. As well as recording video, I'm also going to issue MP3 versions of the exact performances done on video (optimised for audio quality).

Current recordings
  • 2005-09-06
    Rachmaninov - Etude-tableaux in C Sharp Minor, Op.33, No.8
    Video / Audio
  • 2005-07-20
Beethoven - Piano Sonata No. 14 in C Sharp Minor, "Moonlight", Op.27 - I. Adagio sostenuto
    Video / Audio
Recordings to be done/pieces in repertoire
Nobuo Uematsu - Tina/Terra (FF VI Piano Collections)
Scott Joplin - The Entertainer
Nobuo Uematsu - Ending Theme (FF X Piano Collections)
Chopin - Nocturne in E Flat Major, Op.9, No.2

I'm disappointed about the dynamic compression that my camera uses, but there's nothing I can do unfortunately.

You must have worked very hard to get to this standerd of playing, i heard you play the Etude op33no9,and i liked it, but if i was to compare this Etude to a car i would say its a Ferrarie in terms of speed and power, however it sounds like the Etude is driven like a Nissan Micra.

Hi, do you mean louder dynamics? Thank you for listening.

Please dont get me wrong this Etude is very demanding, especialy if you have only playd the piano for 18 months. I hate to say it but try listning to Ashkanazy play this Etude , it will give a good idea about its dynamics, tempo and the music in general. All the best.

I have used Volodo's recording as a source of technical understanding and performance inspiration. I dislike Ashkanazy's playing of this piece.

Here's a recording of the Volodo's version: https://www.zophras.utvinternet.com/Rachmaninoff_Etude-tableaux_in_C_Sharp_Minor.mp3

First off I'd like to say that the etude especially was a valiant effort, esecially at 1.5 years.

But...

Have you had a teacher look at your hand position?  In both pieces you seem to have problems with excessive curling of the last two joints of your fingers and collapsing knuckles.  You have fingers that aren't even being used in strange tense positions throughout, watch the thumb especially.  Watch your wrist, it's often very high and gives your hand a claw shape.  Overall you need to focus much more on relaxation.  Not only do these technical problems affect your sound, they can potential lead to injury.

Your knuckle joints, instead of curving downwards, are often flat or are bent upwards even.  Usually this is a sign of tension or a lack of effiency.  If you can find a good teacher to look at what you're doing and correct your hand position I think you'll be in much better shape.

Guess ah never had this problem seeing as how I never heard of it, but this sounds interesting. Would Glenn Gould be an example of a person with collapsing knuckles because his pinky went borderline broken sometimes when he played.

I haven't seen videos of Glenn Gould playing, but I assume he collapsed either the 1st or 2nd joint in his pinky, not the knuckle, which is ok.

So then by collapsing knuckles you mean the joint where the fingers start is bent up like a cat instead of slightly down or  strait like normal. If so, collapsing knuckle is an awkward term to use for this action.

Collapsing knuckle joints.  Hopefully that's clear?  Honestly the best advice is to have a good teacher take a look at your hand shape because this learning to play off the internet business is pretty risky.

Why not be constructive instead?

If you can spare the time from channelling the essence of the da dum reflections when teaching 6 year olds that is.

You have several. 28 by my count. Which one do you speak of?

Why not be constructive instead?

Why do that when you can just be unnecessarily cruel instead?

Now...Lets quote bambi
