Ginastera - Suite de Danzas Criollas
on: October 03, 2005, 07:53:54 PM
My teacher suggested I learn this piece. Ordered the music a few days ago.
Has anyone played this suite before? Any suggestions for performance/practice? Any recordings you can recommend?
Thanks in advance.

The complete piano music of Ginastera has been recorded by Natalie Hinderas. They are excellent performances. I own the score to this piece, and have read through it but have never really learned it. I find it very similair to his ballet suite Paranbi, which is a creole dance ballet.
I think the difficult movement in this dance suite is III, the nocturne like andante in 11/8, I think it's hard to make this flow. And of course the usual Ginastera clusters and power chords and parralell 5ths abound in this underplayed work. My main tip would be DON'T BANG, the temptation is almost irresistable, but don't it will just sound ugly. The percussion is built in, you don't need to add to it, and don't hurt yourself in the cluster passages in II.
Enjoy, this is a geat piece, underplayed...hey, maybe I should add it to my next recital...

This is a great piece!!!! I have sight read through it but never performed it
As for recordings i have a recording with Alberto Portugheis which is not bad, although, admittedly I have not heard many others.
Good luck!!!!!

I'm finally learning this song after couple years of just listening/ admiring.
There's a pretty good recording for this piece:
"Latin American Music for Solo Piano." Performed by Richard Cionco.
I've found so far that the learning/ reading of the notes for this piece is relatively easy. It's good because that way it'll be easier/ faster to begin perfecting the performance/ musicality aspect.
I really like the options that go alongside learning this piece. If for some reason a comp. has a 5 minute limit on songs... IV & V (or even I & V) work SO well together. The overall piece is just great. And even better, it's not overplayed like his Danzas Argentinas.
