Agree.  But I never thought that from listening to his recordings.  It wasn't until I heard him in person that I realized what his true ability level was.    One reviewer said that he inhabits the works he plays like pure light.

Btw, it's Perahia, not Perhia

Yes, he's amazing. His Chopin sonatas are absolutely amazing - his second sonata is the best I've ever heard. His Chopin etudes are also phenomenal. He is also known for his Mozart, among other things.

Perahia is among my truly favorite pianists.

His schumann is THE BEST I HAVE EVER HEARD better than richter, argerich, simply anyone.

his kreisleriana is so moving, perfect and technically & musically mastered. probably one of the best solo piano records ever made and i don't exarggerate.. listen to perahia's kreisleriana!!!!!!

his recording of schumann's piano concerto is also my favorite, his cadenza is STUNNING!

joyce yang struck me, during the van cliburn, as an artist too!  there are some people who just 'become the music.'  it's cool to watch.  the feelings just flow out of them and doesn't seem artificial.

Completely agree!  One of my top favourite pianists.  His Bach is amazing too.  I have the English suites, you can tell so much thought went into the music.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Perahia is a fabulous pianist.  If you ever have the chance to hear him in recital, don't miss it!

He is very very good...
He also seems to be able to play convincingly in whatever style and period he is playing - Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern - very rare even among great pianists...

One of the teachers at my uni said he won the Leeds competition becuase he gave the set piece (by Brittem, a nocturne i think) poetry! as opposed to all the harshness of the others.
I'm not a huge fan of his etudes, but his Schumann is great and Mozart concertos!
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

It's actually Murray Perahia instead of Murry Perhia. I think he's a great pianist, though!

I think he is great. I like his etudes better than anyone and he had an injury in his hand which made the etudes more difficult.

Yeah, his etudes are amazing - there's such an amazing balance between the hands and his rhythmic sense feels so solid. His op.10#1 is so amazing!!

What do you guys think of his Chopin sonatas? His third is the best IMO.
