I heard his Piano Quintet in C minor, Op. 1 today.  Really gorgeous piece, difficult too.  Quite amazing he wrote it when he was 18!

He was a really good pianist in his day, and a good composer too.  So how come we never hear about him?  Is it because he was accused (falsely) of being a Nazi?  Or was he overshadowed by Ravel, Prokokiev, Rachmaninov, etc.?

Are there any recordings of his compositions anybody can reccomend?

I don't know his piano music, but I really enjoy his Variations on a Nursery Tune, Op. 25.  Yeah, it's a stupid title for a composition, but the music is good.

He recorded some of his own piano music including the f# minor Rhapsody, some of the Etudes as well as Beethoven's op.109 Sonata; he was old and had lost control to a point, but it's always fascinating to hear a composer who was a great pianist play, particularly his own music. These records must be on CD somewhere somehow....
