This is what I think about music along piano playing....

Is there some kind of knowledge we can aquire somewhere which actually teaches us how to understand or make the sense out of a piece I am playing??

for example, in a measure from Clementi's sonata, c g e....

the right hand goes as follow: 1, 2, 1...

it is easy for me to memorize such measure, because when I think of harmonic theory, c e g actually makes a c major chord.

So, in another sentence, is there a study dedicated on how notes are constructed in certain way that makes what we hear and call that "music"??

I was thinking that something like this could indeed improove memorizing skill alot.

any idea on this??

ps, please tell me whether I am being unclear or not

thanks alot

You are perfectly clear. Your question has been asked by millions of students and answered by millions of teachers. You seem to have a lot of these "basic" questions. All of them have been answered many times on this forum, and there are also a lot of books that cover them in detail. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to put you off. I am merely suggesting that you could find all this information in a much more accessible and efficient way.

Specifically to your question: understanding the musical structure of a piece is an important (some say crucial) aspect. The more you understand, the easier it is to memorize and perform. The first thing to do is get acquainted with general music theory. Lern about key signatures, triads, typical chord progressions, overall structure of pieces, etc., then go from there.

thanks xvimbi...

yes, I know triads, chord progression, key signature..

but how about further study on the structure of pieces?? I mean, is basic music theory the end of all?? what others can I further learn?

or if not, can any one name me a good book for this??

thx alot

You might find this thread helpful:
https://www.pianostreet.com/smf/index.php/topic,10402.0.html
Although it focuses on Chopin's Prelude in E minor you'll find the basic principles to help you analize any piece you're working on.
Also,
I'm sure there's more in the forum on this, so running a search may not be a bad idea after all! ;)

thanks sarah...

but as far as I know, I expect the site provided is at least on top of my current level... because I think I am still far from capable of playing Chopin's... since I am just about to start Bach. However, I will take a look.

Secondly, I have been thinking to search, but I always find irrelavant results, yes, it means, I use wrong searching phrases/keywords.

Any more help??

thx alot
