Hi Bernhard, and group!

I just wanted to query you on the suitability of using Tom Kurtz flexibility techniques for the hands. I personally dont see and problem, but Im far from an expert.

For example, I was pondering the notion of using dynamic and relaxed static stretching techiques to improve hand flexibility.

1. Dynamic exercises could involve short swift motions in and out of extended positions. Id bet with a good knowledge of the literature, you could find some extracts from actually pieces that would fit the bill for this.

2. Static relaxed exercise could involve maintaining an extended position in a relaxed state. For example, holding a difficult chord for several minutes while attempting to relax the muscles involved.

These are (as you know) tried and tested sports science techniques, used in many atheletic disciplines. But the question is, are they suitable for the hards of pianist's? I know that artists have caused great injury using various mechanical devices, but Im sure using the Kurtz techniques properly it would be safe.

Well, at least I havent suffered any problems (yet!!!). Iv been using these methods on my right hand, and have been very sucessful. I can now reach my more extreme ranges of motion than previously - the tenth is now quite comfortable, and I actually achieve an 11th (*).

Do you think this would be worth recommending to those with reach difficulties?

In your opinion would it be safe, or are the hands to delicate to tolerate such a regime?

* This was highly stupid of me, as I was over stretching in the extreme. I had the very tips of my thumb and 5 just holding the corners of C and F. I wont attempt this again, as over stretching is highly dangerous and WILL lead to injury.
