That's a beautiful song.  Thanks for sharing it.

Not having ever heard the song before, take what I'm going to say with a grain of salt.  I have the feeling throughout the song that you're trying to sing it the way it was sung in the original version (see prior sentence, I could be wrong).  I just felt like the vocals were tentative, kind of holding back.  As you said, you had just learned this, so that may be what I'm hearing.  I think your voice fits this song pretty well.  It seemed at the end that the range might have been a little high for you.  If this is the case drop the song down into Eb, D, or Db.  You may find you're in a more comfortable key to sing and play.

hey Jef you dont know how right you are.... I really do have that sort of curse of trying to mimic the song....... especially since in the original Musiq sings over himself with a double track sort of thing.... it throws me off........... thanks for the advice.....

sometimes I do struggle with the high notes..... I recorded it after waking up this morning and my voice kept scratching in my throat I could hear it.... it was quite off putting...... I dont have a great range

I admire you and your skill especially your beautiful song ''Don't Say Goodbye''

I loved it

take care

Don't think of it as a curse, it's a learning strategy.  Nothing wrong with it.  At some point, however, you've got to be Silva.  I'd rather hear the wrong note sung with authority and enthusiasm than the right note sung tentatively and emotionless (not saying your singing is emotionless, just making a point).  Think about what the song means to you.  How do "you" feel when you sing it.  What would you want to do with the song if you had written it.  Feel free to change it.  The song will still be recognizable but it will have your style.  It will have a different flavor, a uniqueness.  That's what it's all about, internalizing the music and making it yours.

I think your range sounds fine.  You'll just need to figure out how to maximize it.  When you get to the top end of your range you will need to sing more with your stomach.  That's hard to explain, but think about using your stomach and diaphragm to control the breath.  Think of it this way: Take a deep breath and just let it out.  The quickest way to let it out is to just relax your torso and let the breath escape.  Takes about 1/2 a second to let all that air out.  Now, take a deep breath and let the breath out as slowly as possible.  Notice what you have to do with your torso that is different.  Think about this as you practice singing.
